My sound system was working fine. But after trying to connect the bluetooth phone, using the phone buttons on the wheel, the audio system is now totally MUTED. I have tried to push buttons, restart, and nothing works. Any idea how to fix it before taking it to the dealer?

Not sure if you tried this yet, and the phone has to be paired for it to work....hit the speech button, call or dial a number(like your cell voice mail or a friend), when connected hit the speech button and then say mute off.

I don't think "Mute" is an option, although I do agree with you on testing it. The bluetooth kit is supposed to mute all the speakers when you use the Speech button, but for some reason, your kit thinks it's active all the time.

Check all the wiring and see if you can actually use the bluetooth functions.

I'm assuming you don't have the nav option either... so you might want to try turning on your radio too  I know it sounds silly, but the kit might actually be powering off your radio in order to "mute" the speakers.

Mute is an option on the hands free system for the microphone. You just hit the speech button during a call and say mute, the voice then comes on and says microphone muted. To un-mute you hit the speech button and say mute off, the voice then says microphone not muted. I use it all the time. I've found the hands free system lets you do just about anything you'd do with a phone and keypad, but you just use your voice. For example to send a number like when a recording says press 1 for english, you simply hit the speech button and say 1 send, and it sends the 1 number tone.

But after reading the op again, are they talking about a muted microphone or no sound? When they said mute, i thought they meant the microphone, if they mean the speakers have no sound then your suggestion would be a good place to start. Maybe worth trying un-pairing/removing the phone from the hands free system and see if sound comes back.

When I first started using the bluetooth feature w/ my phone, I had a few times where everything stopped working and it seemed like the whole system froze up.

I forgot what triggered it, but I do remember it was the same issue over and over. (I gotta rack my brain for this one)
It hasn't happened since about Jan-Feb, but I think it was caused by the phone losing its pairing w/ the car.
Oh yeah, it was when my phone would still be showing bluetooth but wouldn't working correctly (after my original setup and daily usage)
When I would pull over and try and re-pair the phone... it would freeze up.
No radio, no phone, complete silence, and all buttons useless.
But turning the car on & off again would fix the issue and my phone/bluetooth would return to its normal status.
My phone used to lose its bluetooth pairing when I received a large amount (like 20) texts while driving, I dont know why...
but it doesn't anymore and that issue has been fine for months now.
