My daughter has a 95 Mirage auto f4a22, 1.8 engine. It slips badly in first then once in second it's fine and so is third, fourth. Any ideas? Reverse is fine also. Any help would be appreciated. College kid with limited money. I'm willing to rebuild but want to know if there can be a simpler solution. Also any good references to a reputable site to order rebuild kit would be great!

Have yu done a filter and fluid change on it , the filter may be restricting pressure frum being old. It seems sorta like a pressure issue that the clutches are not having enough fluid pressure to properly engage each gear. Have yu checked the fluid level? Wut does the fluid look like? Smell? The F4A2 series is not a complicated one to rebuild , here is a good reputable american site for kits:

The first thing I changed was fluid and filter. Fluid was dark. Level was right. Anything I can do with the valve body? Or should I just go ahead and rebuild and get it right. Where's a good source for pressure gauges/adapters? Thanks for your input and help.

Thats a tought call , i say the rebuild would be the best thing to do. It seems that there is debris in the valve body that is likely causing the issue but it may not be easily remedied , co a teardown would be the best way to go. Inspect the drum band while torn open.

You might want to just clean the valve body before you rebuilt the entire gearbox. Take out the valve body and disassemble it be careful of the ball bearings and the springs in the valve body. Make sure you remember where everything is located. There are a few spool valves that looks like rods and moves in and out in their channel. What you can do is move it manually and see wether any one of those is not smooth. My advice is just to polish all the spool valves using autosol or and metal polisher. Then put everything back together. I have tried this on a couple of autotrans and they worked. good luck.
