Hello there, I drive a 1998 montero and have some questions.

My oil was all gone and i found out 3 days after noticing my oil pressure gauge thing wasn't "working". I put in 5 qts the last time i changed my oil at 185k miles (currently at 186k miles) so i didn't think i'd have to put anymore in until the next 5k miles came around. I went a little over 1k miles and all my oil was gone. I put some more in the other night and have not driven it until earlier today when i bought some thickening stuff for the oil (idk what it is i just know it's really thick and it was for the oil). we drove it around for 3 blocks and noticed smoke coming from the hood. It could have been oil spilled onto the engine but then i noticed that there was oil all over some pipes. i'm pretty scared as to what to do with my car now can any one help?

One more thing, the last time i changed my oil was the first time i had ever done so (because it's my first car) so i do know if i might have did something wrong.

Sorry but I think you need to get someone who is vaugly familiar with vehicles to show you around the engine bay. I'm not critising you for doing your own work but you really need some personal guidance until you have enough know-how to carry on. I'm afraid from what you have indicated that you might cause some serious engine damage and it will cost mega $$$ to repair. Please seek some help ASAP from anyone who will listen.

Jim

Sorry but i have to agree with Jim. these model Mitsubishi's are very particular. On many Pajero's/Montero's the system is setup with an external engine oil cooler , most i have seen have taken more than 5 quarts of oil on an oil service. Also , oil thickening stuff is a BIG no no , especially on models with an engine oil cooler , and the design of the oil pickup and oil pump . with teh design of teh pan the pump will pick it up and once it reaches the pump the shear viscosity and pressure will rupture the front oil pump seal of not the rear one also.

Were yu reading the oil indicator correctlly? Oil on wut pipe? Exhaust? The oil cooler lines ? Side of the engine , where did yu see the oil? The times noticing that oil was missing , have yu noticed oil under the vehicle or anywhere after parked?

My first thought is you may not have gotten a good seal on the oil filter (I hope you changed the filter), or you cross threaded it.

I 2nd the opinion that you should not be doing any more troubleshooting yourself. Either ask someone that's fairly knowledgable to help you out, or have it towed somewhere.

I agree with everyone else, seek professional help.

But my main concern is the whole "5k" comment.... dont you know that you need to change your oil every 3k????

I go 4k.
I don't think 5k is out of line, but if the car sees a lot of in town driving 3-4 would probably be a good idea.

Fresh oil is better than old oil.... its like $15-$25 each time depending on your oil.... I never liked seeing people go over 3k.

yes 5K is really pushing it , pushing it that far will cause problems up the road , like dried up oil corroding and clogging the oil drain back ports is the one main side affect , and if there is more il on top of the cylinder heads then in the pan there is an issue.

Well, 4k changes on my '95 Monty - traded it in with 206k running perfectly.
4K on my '88 Turbo Ford - finally blew an HG at 283k while driving it like a race car.

5k is less than ideal, but I think it's the least of the issues in this particular situation.
