I replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor on 1990 2.0 turbo Eclipse w/o success and I still get Code 23. The timing is even at 7 degrees BTDC w/ignition timing adjustment terminal grounded, but timing mark is erradic when ground is removed. Thanks for your help.

timing will always jump aroudn at idle and is normally +25-30 if I can remember right. 1g's are more aggressive with timing than the 2g's.

What mods do you have?

No Mods, its stock (how sad). Good news the SPS/timing appear normal. Its runs exactly the same with the new sensor as it did when Code 23 popped up, rough & shaky w/no power, but does not stall. Are we sure Code 23 relates to CPS's only?I've replaced plugs & wires.

is it like that all the time or just when the engine is cold?

sorry, but I have to ask
did you gap the plugs correctly? did you put the plug wires in the correct order?

All the time. The wires in are the correct order. I will re-gap the plugs and confirm strong spark for each.

water is ok, usually it's just condensation from inside the exhaust pipes until they get hot enough to burn it off. unless it's coolant colored or you are seeing a bunch of white smoke.

No, its clear and cool and burned off, but there was a lot of it. I tryed flipping the position sensor 180' as suggested and the car ran with increased water, so I filipped it back to the orginal position and the condensation stopped after 5 minutes.

My first impression when it faltered was it wasn't running on all cylinders and has the same ever since. That morning I was late and started drive immediately without any warm up and the problem started and after 2 minutes the check engine light came on with Code 23 (Pause, 2 long sweeps & 3 short sweeps, pause...) I may be reading it wrong since my check engine light only come one before when I didn't tighten gas gap all the way. I had my ECM rebuilt 3 years ago and the car has run very well ever since, until now.

Timing at idle is 7 BTDC and goes up past the timing mark when I rev. I think you said that was normal. Its got 190K on it but I've maintained it well. I have not tested compression.

I got my G3 V6 to drive, but prefer dirving my G1 w/turbo. It might be time to modify the G3. I had hot wires in it for a few years, but had to replace the CAT and took them off to make it stock for waranty purposes.

Thanks PW for you help. I would love to get it running again and won't give up.

try pulling it back to 5*btdc. when is the last time you replaced your spark plugs and wires?

I immediately replaced plugs & wires the night the problem occured and it ran just as bad, so I ordered and replaced the CPS (due to Code 23) and it runs just as bad w/new and old CPSs. I'm getting spark on all 4 cylinders. Altering thee timing up or down seems to have no effect on performance.

Thanks.
