Story:
I put on an uicp w/a 1g bov and was having major overboosting issues. Upon a forum i started it was made clear that with my turbo (evo316gbig) it was not meant to run low boost numbers. I took off the turbo, ported the inlet and opened up the route to the wastegate so it would flow better.
We just put everything back together and before doing so, i made quadruple sure that when i clamped the turbo together it was not hitting any fins, and that it was centered...

Upon initial startup we had a major oil leak from the oil supply line due to the fact that as newbs to this, we didn't have the bolt in correctly.. (the hole was not lined up to the feed line). The car ran for about 8 seconds before it was shut off.. we fixed that and made sure of no other leaks, and went for a ride...

Upon slowly getting on it, at about 3g revs, we heard a high pitched noise ( the closest thing to describe it would be the sound of a dremmel)

We thought it was a boost leak, but i managed to get it to make the noise while watching the guage read 5 pounds of vacuum...

the only other hints i can provide are when in nuetral and you rev it when it gets down to just before idle rpm range you can hear a little squeek... like when your brakes squeek when your coming to a stop... but it only lasts for a 1/2 sec... and you do have to listen for it..

Is it crucial to have filled the turbo with oil before starting it up?

So.... Any ideas? Thanks

if you don't prime the turbo (oil it before you start up) you are going to be forcing a metal on metal friction. This will do immediate damage and shorten the life of your turbo.

so your saying that i perminantly messed up my turbo? I checked for shaft play and their is none... sideways up and down, front to back...

I mean that there is nothing more than their was before i ever pulled it out... it spins freely... so if it idles for 2 seconds before oil gets squirted into it, it is shot?

i think i read somewhere that at install of turbo you should prime it for like 25 seconds before actual start up

the evo III was actually meant to run low boost numbers because on the EVO III (the autocross car it came on) it was kept at, relatively, low boost for that type of racing. the reason it won't stay at low boost on your car if you are boost creeping is because the stock fuel system can't handle the bigger turbo. And when going lean the added heat and the less-efficient wastegate system doesn't work properly.

from the noises you describe it sounds like either the compressor wheel or the turbine wheel is rubbing on something. It could be a metal shard, a barb, or even the housing. you really need to check to make sure that this isn't the case

I pulled off the intake and there was no signs at all of any kind of rubbing..
i spun the wheel, and there was no hinderance to be had... it was like a hot knife goin through butter man... just smooooooth.. no shaft play, no hard spots...
