2.0 DOHC N/A

helped a friend pick it up a couple of days ago, the lady said that it won't start, and that the shop she brough it to said it was the timing belt.

Got it back to my friends house, I took the timing cover off the top, and low and behold, theres a timing belt there, and its nice and tight, so I dropped a battery in it and told my friend to just quickly hit the key, did so, motor turned, but the cams didn't.

Can anyone help me and give me a direction to start looking in? I've done a timing belt before, but the was a SOHC, and it was a ford. I'm wondering if its an easy fix, or if I'm gonna have to rip the whol side of the motor apart to find out what might be wrong with it.

thanks for the help, and if this was the wrong forum, sorry about that

Check and make sure the belt is around your crankshaft pully and all the other accessories (water pump... etc).

If thats good, make sure your starter is actually turning your flywheel.

hmmm, I didn't think about the starter hitting the flywheel, what are the chances of the piston slapping a valve if I were to just take out the plugs and see if I can see the pistons moving?

Take the plugs out and spin the crank by hand in a clockwise direction. watch the cam gears. if they turn with the crank and it is easy to turn then the starter may not be engaging.

if you can turn it by hand and the cam gears aren't moving DO NOT continue to spin the crank.
