G'day all,

I've got a 92 Magna (SE TR) with a touch of trouble. I've already had to fit a new manual gearbox/differential in her, and now this.

In the morning when I start her, I get a ticking, clacking sound from the right side of the engine, then it goes away after a few seconds.

When the engine is all warmed up, the sound comes back, but dies off in the higher rpm's, only apparent when idling.

I'm guessing its not the bearings by the lack of a continuous ongoing sound...

So I'm going to hazard a guess and say its either the tappets or the lifters, and lack of a decent oil change by some previous neglecting owner.

Planning a journey up to Brisbane Aug 1st and low on money... 1700k's of road.. dun want to screw the engine more...

Any ideas?

Which engine do yu have?
And Welcome to the forum. Yeah yu ahve pretty much seemed like yu have diagnosed it. It does seem to bet the hydraulic lifters that are causing that noise and the issue yu are having. yes lack of proper oil change service can cause that. There is a way to bleed air out of them , but typically a drive up the street under moderate engine speed can do that also and should have gone away. I do not kno of anything that would help to solve the issue , as i do not kno of the engine yu have.

Ohh that can be timing chain noise. , The timing chain tensioner can be loosing its pressure , SO when yu start up cold the tensioner has to re pressure up and pipck up the slack of the timing chain. But ill leave Chain Rattle get to this , he is alot more experianced than i am on this engine.

thats a timing chain noise

possibly the guides have worn and need replacing
there are two chains in the motor
one running the oil pump the other the timing cog

price of a chain kit is approx $90 plus freight
labour in fitting unknown
the engine out is the easiest way to do the job

In picture there is an inspection plate with 2 x10 mm bolts
on the timing cover approx level to the alternator

you can adjust any chain slack there

undo cover
undo lock nut
press firm down on the finger hold
tighten lock bolt
refit cover :)

whats the kms on the engine -every 100,000 chains need to be replaced

could use a better oil but it wont change the chain noise

you should have the chains done before the trip
they have to be replaced anyway

you could do your trip but dont overrev the motor keep the revs below 3000 rpm

Awesome.

I think its safe enough to do the journey first... then fix her up on the other end.

Cheers.
