hi guys, I was driving on the highway for like 45 mins when I got off I went to a 35 mph street my temp guage shot up, I pulled over and my car was bubbling what looked like water in the front white container on the left side with a line in it. Is this common or should I be worried? Does it need coolant. or will water do? Im at a friends house while my 95 eclipse gst rests but I need help

your supposed to mix coolant and water 50/50. also distilled water is best but regular tap water will work.

EDIT also check your thermostat.

its not supposed to get so hot that it bubbles. replace the thermostat (like 20 dollars with gasket and RTV sealent). see if that helps. how many miles are on the car?

Fill it up with water until you get it back to your house and get it fixed. No use you put good water and anitfreeze in it until you do, it might just leak out. Once you get it fixed, driain it and put fresh coolant in it.

You can drive it back home, just keep some water with you and pull over when it gets over 1/2 gauge and starts heading for 3/4.

Wait for it to cool down before you add any water to it though. If you put cold water in it when it's hot, you can crack the head.

And how long has it been since the water pump was replaced? The OEM has a plastic impeller that deteriorates over time. i pulled mine off and it fell out in 3 pieces at 110K I guess it had never been changed...

my car has i think the same problem. anything longer than a 20 minute drive in the middle of the day and my car will spew anitfreeze all over where ever i stop, and anything longer than a 30 minute drive and it overheats unless i turn the heater on full blast. 90 degree weather + heater on full over 30 minutes makes for an unpleasent drive lol. but mostly i only drive my car like 5-10 miles at a time and the temp gauge stays at half.

Yea my car goes through coolant in about a month and then starts overheating. I usually just pull over and put the heat on blast for a little while then turn the car off and I keep antifreeze and water in my car at all times. I'm guessin I probably need a new thermostat too cause I already replaced all the hoses and clamps and the radiator cap. There's no way I go through so much coolant. I don't have any smoke comin out the exhaust or anything.
