What about the 1.8 GDI. Is it possible to get any more oomph from it? I know someone that has a non-standard air filter on his carisma, but i don't know if that's for performance or accoustics only.
thanks!

I've managed to mod my 1.8GDI ok so far, i happened to have a left over K&N 300+ universal cone filter lying around and as a Christmas present my best m8 was able to find an adapter that fitted between the filter and the MAF sensor, i'll ask him where he found it. i've also de-cat my exhaust, this is easy, go to a scrapyard and ask them for an olld cat, they'll grind it off for you then you take it home, unbolt the ends then ram a crowbar down through it until you've gotten all the ceramic out, or just grind it open, take out the insides then weld it shut, i did this and now it acts as a resonator making the car sound pretty nice.
you CAN get a considerable performance increase out of a normally aspirated engine with lots of little mods, a good way to go is with a cold air induction system, this is a pip taking air from a cold place and not from inside the engine bay and then you fit phonic (SP?) spacers between the head and the intake manifold and then between the intake manifold and the throttle body, these are just sheets of thermally insulating material the same shape as the gaskets placed in between to stop the intake manifold heating up. if you can be bothered i polishing your intake manifold too, the die-cast aluminum creates a lot of drag and saps up HP, just take it off and get some polishing tools. also, taking the engine cover off your engine then putting a bonnet vent over where the intake manifold is can also help keep it cool. it's a lot of work but every step gets you (on average) an extra 5BHP, and i think it's more fun! they're mostly cheap mods too if you do them yourself. alternatively.. just NOS it, probably about the same to fit, will give more power but you'll just have to fill up with nitrous oxide as well as your normal 95RON.
Also, i'm not sure what engine the 1.6 carisma uses but i think it's the 4G62, now the 4G62 1.6 and the 4G63 1.8 blocks are pretty much identical, it might be possible to fit a 1.6 risma with 1.8 internals as an upgrade, i've been meaning to look into it as is struck me as odd that they have the exact same cylinder bore but different stroke lengths.
