It's a hydrolic lifter, you have no adjustment. The lifter sits down in there and the rocker rests across it and the valve, the cam presses down on the rocker and the rocker pivots off of the lifter and presses down on the valve.

To me, it looks like that sucker is dry around that area and maybe got hot and that cuase the discoloration.

You can turn the engine until that rocker is not being pressed, then take a flat-head screwdriver and pop the rocker off of the lifter and pull out the lifter to inspect it. This way, you don't have to pull the cams off and and have to re do your timing.

power steering wouldn't make that noise unless the pulley was about to fall off.

an exhaust leak could sound like that

if the trans isn't shaking violently then its not the noise, it sounds louder than something like that. you should really put those bolts back in though.

Just watched the video. I have heard that noise before.

My old Jeep made that sound, it also lost alot of power so i took it off the road. On those old things, you can take off the valve cover and run it at low rpm and you can actually watch the valvetrain. It was a stuck valve.

To me, that intake valve in the pics is the problem. It is probably stuck partially open, therefore in the compression stroke for that piston, it is allowing the air to escape through the intake, making that wierd sound that sounds when you take your car through an automated car wash, and you are inside.... but in a short burst. Do a compression test on that cylinder to confirm, I am willing to bet that is the problem.

Hopefully, that lifter was just fried so that it's sticking out a bit too far and maybe is just making the valve open a little too soon. That may give a false OK compression reading because it is getting full compression, it's just releasing it too soon.

an exhaust leak won't make a knock sound, more like a loud putt sound.

try checking your lifters like hmatt said

change the PCV valve and check the nipple on the valve cover to see if it's blocked

pcv valve??? could that be the reason for the knock? and nipple wheres tat i dont remember ne nipple. but ill sure check it out

edit..... also when i feel for the area it is makin the noise(where i think it commin from) i cant feel nething but if i feel the oil pan i can feel it in there. but the sound seems lik it head related. as i said b4 one of the rods moved cept 1 but was maybe a 32nd(twords the other rods) of a inch so it cant be that. and it didnt seem to be a wrist pin but ill still check that out(pvc)

Ok, this might sound a little wierd, but if the PCV valve is not working, you eill get some excess pressure in the valve cover. If that happens, it could try to blow by the pistons and can possibly be where the noise is comming from.

If it runs fine without the valve cover, then that is the problem. Replace the $11 PCV valve and make sure that other breather hose is clear or gunk while you are at it, and try it again.
