Greetings from New Zealand

I have a 93 Shogun – British origin and private import into New Zealand. Has given me no trouble at all in 5 years, but has an intermittent starting problem I am seeking help with.

Once in a while, sometimes a couple of time in a day sometimes months apart, the starter will not engage. Sometimes a flick in and out of N or P will fix it, on other occasions it takes a dozen goes at this till it will engage. Last night could not get it to start at all after 10 min and took another car. In the morning it was fine – and is still starting OK. Have also tried switching the alarm isolate switch off and on – does not seem to help. I took it into a garage a while back and the said it was most likely worn starter brushes and changed those – was fine for a few months then started happening again. The current batter is only a couple of months old.

Any suggestions – I thought perhaps the interlock switch on the transmission, but symptoms not entirely consistent with that as just leaving it overnight seemed to work this time.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Douglas

The starter itself is most likely bad. If yu are hearing teh starter but its doesnt seem to be engaging the engine its bad , or just clicking. The solenoid of teh starter itself is bad , and in most cases the solenoid will cost almost the same as another starter itself. I dont think that anything is wrong with the flywheel itself . Its most likelly an over worn starter solenoid. Best to replace the whole unit.

thanks - the started does not whirr and I don't hear a click from the solenoid so you are probably right - been OK today - I'll look at getting a new starter and solenoid.

Cheers
