Take it to the dealership. I know it's an obvious answer, but this is no miracle.

Question... what does your "Miles to Fill-up" gauge say?

The "miles to fill-up" takes your remaining fuel and multiplies it by your current MPG. If the gauge reads a 30 MPG average and you have 5 gallons left, the "miles to fill-up" should read about 150 miles.

But I can't explain how you put in 8 gallons. That's more than half the tank! Dealership!

I believe there is a TSB for this...a small number of lancers have experienced this issue.

Dealership should be able to fix it!

This happened to me except the tank was empty and my gauge was flashing, and i went to the gas station, put $20 in and it was still flashing!! I knew you didn't get as much gas for the money nowadays, but this was ridiculous!! The car being only 2 months old, I figured maybe the gas pump was broken, so I had the attendant come out and watch me fill it up, and sure enough, another 3 gallons and it was full. Haha...whoops...

Had the same issue happen to me the day that I drove my Lancer off the lot. Took it to the dealership and they replaced the Sending Unit Sensor. Works like a charm now!

Someone on another forum had this same issue. The sensor got stuck behind the filler pipe or something like that. They replaced the sensor and problem solved.

The meter does jump drastically when you least expect it.

Yeah my gas gauge broke too. Why can't they just have a regular gas gauge!!!!!! The dealer kept my car for two days it was the first time they ever experienced the gas gauge problem.
