Hi,

Can you help me checking my distributor? Im suspecting that this does not properly distribute electricity to the spark plugs because 3 out of the 4 plugs appears to be black (no oil traces). I am referring to a 4G63 engine. Also, I just change my plugs and still the same. I have also re-timed by distributor according to specs.

Thanks for any help.

Probably not distributor but bad ignition wire. Sveral ways to check but if you have not changed best to do so.

Jim, you mean the High-tension wires or the ignition coils?

I already did replace the HTW but still the same. Spark plug easily turns black. Is it possible that the alternator is the culprit? That the current it gives drops when A/C is turned on? I noticed that the engine's RPM drops when A/C or Transmission (A/T) is engaged. Idle speed servo works fine though.

Yes, I mean the ignition leads to each spark plug. If you know which one is not firing you can swap around a lead to see if it makes a diff.

I think you are chasing an electrical gremlin if you do not get an increase in the RPM when AC etc is on. Have you tried removing and cleaning the electrical connector in the engine bay. I had a similiar problem with my Pajero and had to clean each connector to make sure they were making contact between pins and sockets. Made a big difference with all sorts of things you wouldn't expect like tranny shifting. Might be worth a try.

I tested the ignition coils and read the values below:

primary coils: 0 Ohms
secondary coils: 13.45 KOhms

Secondary coils seems ok but the primary should read around 0.7 - 0.86 ohms according to the manual.

Do you think this is the cause?

No I don't think it is the coil. If was bad it would break down under load and not give you the problems as you describe. It is still more likley to be a faulty ignition lead or electrical connector. If you want to stop the guesswork bring into a garage that has a scope and they will find the problem in 2 minutes. Then decide if it is worth you fixing or they should do.
