Hello Everyone,

I am in the process of working on the timing belt for my 2000 Montero with 6G74 engine. There are special tools required to remove the crankshaft pulley, which I didn't have. I have searched this forum for information on the special tools required to remove the pulley and I can see many other people have had my same dilemna. The part numbers for special tools as referenced in the factory service manual are MB990767 (1 required) and MD998715 (2 required).

I found one link for where to buy an end yoke holder but it really doesn't look like the one in the factory service manual...and it costs money. And I didn't have time to wait for it.

So...I made my own. I had access to a lathe to machine two 14mm bolts that I used. I'm sure a substitute for my milled parts might be easier, such as 1/2" bolts. And there are probably an infinite number of other substitutes that can be made for what I used. However, mine did work like a charm!

For your reference, here is a list of what was needed to make my homemade special tool and the drawings with dimensions. Dimensions are in millimeters unless otherwise specified.

1 - 1/4"x1-1/2"X 800mm STEEL FLAT STOCK
(DRILL HOLES PER DRAWING)
1 - 1/4"x1-1/2"X 120mm STEEL FLAT STOCK
(DRILL HOLES PER DRAWING)
2 - M14x80 S.H.C.S.
(MACHINE PER DRAWING)
4 - 14mm NUTS
2 - 14mm LOCK WASHERS
1 - M8x30 HEX HEAD BOLT
1 - 8mm NUT
1 - 8mm LOCK WASHER
1 - 8mm WASHER

Also, the center bolt of the crankshaft pulley is loosened by turning it counterclockwise. Just thought I would mention that because I have seen several posts asking the question. Thanks.
