OK, my wife put in transmission oil before I left to work this morning...... I did'nt make it to work this morning :(
Was at a stop light and the transmission would not switch to Drive or Reverse. Pushed car to side, Called autozone and asked about what type of transmission fluid should of been put in.... It was AtF-4.......She put in Type 1 transmissoin oil!
Any advice? I guess the question is.... Did i destroy my transmission that has been replaced on 5/08? :(
The car started blowing smoke out of the exhaust, and i sniffed the oil and yes it smelt burnt :(
If i get the car towed back home and drain the transmission oil, can i simply replace it with the right type to get it back to normal ? :D

You could try, but you may have ruined some of the eternals running the worng fluid.

Wow, this is turning out to be a bad day, A 3$ bottle of the wrong transmission fluid Destroy a 2300$ transmission that i have just replaced 4 months ago.
Do you think there's a chance the internals have not been damaged being a newer replaced transmission? (4 months ago)

Just because it not old does not mean it cant get easily damaged. Why were yu need to add fluid? Had yu performed a transmission fluid change? But yeah , running the inopropriate fluid having either a to low or too high viscosity will deteriate the life of the transmission quickly.

I checked the oil last night and it appeared to not have any transmission oil in it, but after i broke down this morning (near a mechanic shop) I had a mechanic look at it and he smelt burnt oil from transmission and said the dip stick was to small for the transmission, (which explains why i thought i needed oil in the first place)
I just bought this car less then 4 months ago and they had replaced the transmission before i bought it. So they probably put wrong dipstick then.
And no i never have changed the transmission oil before but wiling to try it out if its possible to do it myself.
I read forum posts saying I cant do it myself and i need a machine from a mechanic to do it properly, but This is a older car (93) and im going to look up if i can do it alone, If anyone knows this answer i'd appreciate it :)

Its kinda tough one. So prior to adding the the transmission fluid the car had no issues? Or was there noticeble things happening that preampted yu to check the fluid?I mean to out of the blue check it besides out of monthly routine is not ordinary, or atleast i think. But also , if they put in teh wrong tranny dipstick , also the wrong amount of fluid could have been put in also not helping yur situation.

If yu are plan to service the transmission yurself , it is not terribly difficult. Altho i do recommend a filter and gasket service place frum a place that deals with transmission parts and not a regular parts house service it with a cork type gasket, those are trouble, and the gasket is so troublesum.They usually leak.

Correct, everything was fine before that wrong oil was added. Nothing Was wrong that made me check the Tranny oil, I just checked it randomly after adding more motor oil, Now im worried my transmition is ruined. I really hope its just the oil being my only vehicle. Called auto zone for a price check on a transmition .....2400$ more then what i paid for the vehicle itself,

Thanks for the responses, very helpfull. I will be looking for some kind of guide to guide me through the process of draining tranny fluid now for this specific vehicle, finding alot of how -to's on google but for newer cars only,

one way is to

undo most of the pan bolts
dont use a screwdriver to prise off the pan (it may damage the gearbox)

tap with a rubber mallet

and capture the old oil a suitable container

fit the new gasket and filter

refill the auto with mitsubishi brand auto oil

using a funnel refill the auto through the dip stick hole

Pretty every mitsubishi transmission 1992 and up has a fluid drain screw. Yull be able to drain the fluid before removing the tranny fluid sump/pan

Refill with Mitsubishi tranny fluid or an exquivelant Synthetic ( III-IIID Synthetic)

Drain the wife..

Beat the oil?

or somthing..

That may have an adequate effect also

Ok, I was able to drain the transmission easy as removing a screw on the bottom of the transmission, replaced it with 5 quarts of ATF 4 type oil, (as specified from autozone) .
At first everything seemed ok, I drove around the block, but about 4 minutes into driving the transmition started to stall, then the vehicle would not accelerate , (barely made it back home coasting on nuetral)
So my guess with no mechanical experience would be, i need to take it to a mechanic to have a machine pressure flush my transmition to get the oil i obviously didnt get (being i failed to fix it).
Or my worst fear... i destroyed the tranny.........But I dont think so? becuase it did after all let me drive it for 4 minutes, and i dont think it would of worked at the begining if it was a bad transmittion, the oil just failed becuase i didnt flush it all? I hope thats right, any comment or thoughts would be appreciated :)

Did yu replace the transmission filter? If yu are going to service it yu should have reinstalled a new filter, especially after wut has happened. But thats just my estimate.

All I can say is OOOOOPPPS!

And, I guess it's not such a big deal that my wife won't even pump her own gas.
