That's a good point waynerwats! How far are you? :P
I had to look at both sides of the deal.
1. I could sell the car for as much as I can, say 500 or 700. The person who bought it might find out that only the head gasket was bad and he got a really good deal. He benefits and I start with a new car with a loss of about 3 grand that I plan to make up in a couple years.
2. I could spend 2 grand on engine repairs, find out that there might be other things inside the engine to fix (cracks?) and spend more on that and stay with the same car for a loss of 2.5 grand. The thing with these kind of repairs is, once you start putting in some money, you have to go with the car, so you could end up spending a lot to get it back in shape. I cannot decide to go with this option based on that much uncertainty.
Comparing both of these situations, it seems reasonable to me to not take any more chances with a car that's giving me issues. I'm sorry guys, but I think I'm quite close to ending my stint with mitsu.
My decision is pending a quote from a different mechanic this weekend. In case he thinks I can still rescue the car for a good price, I will definitely consider keeping the car!! I will keep you guys updated.
Btw, I'm moving to Minneapolis in three weeks and all of this chaos has to end soon :(

Startling new development, I'm tempted to call it good news!
The second mechanic did a pressure test and drove the car around with the new radiator and he says he can't find anything wrong with it. He also says that there's a chance it's consuming coolant little by little, but the only way to diagnose that is for me to drive the car around for a week and check the levels after, because from his driving it looked to him like it was not consuming any.
So.....no overheating, no coolant consumption, driving fine = clean chit for now! Looks like I get my ride back in an hour.
Will keep you guys posted about the developments if any!
EDIT: All for 60 bucks, including a new radiator cap :)
EDIT: Got the car, drove it on the highway and in the city. Looks good so far...
