i've been having a problem (for a full year now) where coolant is discharged and won't stay in the overflow.

if i fill up the system (including the overflow), after a few days the overflow bottle will be completely empty, and the coolant level in the radiator will be a little low. i've checked for leaks in the radiator and pipes, and have found none.

anybody else had this problem? any ideas what the heck's going on?

(ps: this is a 4G64 engine that's actually in an '88 mitsubishi van/wagon (stock)...same as used in eclipse)....

And if it's smoking a little out the tailpipe, you might need another headgasket.

+1. If your oil is a little milky its prolly a headgasket.

On your next oil change look at the oil. Does it look milky and not oil like? = head gasket.

Or one of the hoses may just be bad and only leak upon being heated up.

oil looks fine and no white smoke...
actually, the coolant hasn't been mysteriously disappearing, it just seems to be getting automatically "discharged" from the system via the coolant overflow bottle.

after you fill the system with coolant, she'll spend the next couple days expelling coolant from the system (via the overflow bottle) until there's no 'reserve' left and you've just got a slightly low level of coolant in the radiator itself.

been awhile since i've changed the thermostat, but she usually operates at 'normal operating temp' unless i'm pushing her hard and have forgotten to 'top up the system.'

any ideas what the heck's goin' on?
