r134a is the later used refrigerant. I can't remember the name of the older kind but I upgraded my AC on my 1g from that older one to r134a. Chances are EMC's older 3kgt doesn't have r134a but the older kind.

I don't know about you, but I can't afford to do "shotgun mechanics". I would get a stethascope, start the car, and do some sound checks. Try and figure out where the sound is coming from by using the stethascope aganst every single moving part (alternator, pulleys, tensioners, water pump, A/C pump, anything with a bearing etc.) and even though it sounds stupid, parts of the frame, and other structral and non-structural components (they can help lead you to the actual issue). If you don't have a stethascope you can take a long screwdriver, or even a 3/8 or 1/2 long extension and and use that. Hold it against the part you want to listen to, and hold the other end to your temple close to your ear, or actually put it in your ear (I know it sounds like back yard mechanics, but it does work, techs use it in the shop all the time). Long story short, I used this method to find out that an alternator was going bad, AFTER we had replaced all kinds of other stuff. I LOVE problems like this, and really wish I was there to give you a hand, if that means anything. I know I have NO rep at all here, but I do know a few "old school" diag tricks, that do really work. Oh yeah.... The refirgant that is most likely in your 3kGT is R12. I seriously doubt that is the problem though, unless it is a bearing that is going out on your A/C pump. All A/C refrigerant has the lubricant allready included (unless it is some some sort of wierd refrigerant, don't ask). If you are worried about the lubricant being low on your A/C system, check to see if you still have pressure in your A/C system. If there is a leak in your A/C, pressure will be reduced, but even thinking about that, your lubricant shouldn't be decreased, just because of a small leak. I would suggest trying some of that stuff. If all else fails, take it to your local mechanic, and have them diagnose the issue. I hope that helps a bit, and seriously wish you the best of luck!
