Damn, less than two weeks after I bought mine and wrote the car off before I even had it installed. Nice deal, though. Still plan on putting her in when I get the new car on Wednesday.

The installation on my 2009 GTS was dead simple -- very nicely detailed instructions. The only "omission" for the (atleast the) 2009 model year I would say is the iPod adapter on the center console. The manual states 3 plugs to disconnect when it's technically 4. No worries, had it done in under an hour. Decided to try it first w/o the replacement bushings even though I opted for them.

I didn't realize beforehand just how much more effort it takes to shift gears now. Especially with the finnicky first and second gears and their synchros. Granted, the car has under 300km on it, but damn it's a bit more involved now. The throw, on the other hand, is greatly reduced and the knob height is now damn near perfect.

I wonder, however, if the shorter throw, which equates to quicker engagement of gears, causes extra wear on the 1/2 and 3/4 synchros (5 you don't use nearly as much). The old shifter with the longer throw meant a longer but more gradual easing onto the collars... I mean, the transmission may not have been designed for such rapid shifts.

Anybody care to refute this pondering with fact? I hope I'm wrong.

This is the main problem with short throws on all vehicles. They wear out your synchros much faster than the stock shifter. My friend said he got only about 40,000 miles out of his short throw before his synchros went.

Hi everyone,

A short shifter will not wear out the synchros of your transmission faster than a stock shifter. The vast majority of our customers, including ourselves, have been driving cars with short shifters for many years with absolutely no issues related to the transmission. It’s really a matter of how you drive the car and most people who have driven with short shifters will never go back to stock. If you always shift hard without depressing the clutch fully, you will wear your synchros even with a stock shifter.

As for the increased effort to shift with a short shifter, it’s normal because the pivot point was relocated and the shifter shaft is shorter, decreasing mechanical advantage and thereby shortening the throw. The shift feeling is more direct and a weighted shift knob can also help to offset this slightly increased effort.

Thanks,

Frank
