Hello all,
I am a new 1G owner (1992 GS Auto, 145k miles, Auto (OD is gone), 300 bucks, I think I robbed the guy.) and have already found some very useful information on this site. This site is great and seems to be updated regularly (unlike the other Mitsu sites).

Actually found it on eBay, he described it as a slipping tranny and said it should be towed. I bid on it, but ebay didn't accept it, then the auction ended (I was sniping at the last 20 seconds). I emailed him, and he still sold it to me for 300. Poor guy, I showed up with a battery, and it started right up after sitting for 6 months. I drove it away. You should have seen the guys face when I drove it out of the yard. The tranny works perfect except for no OD, and I had to replace the ISC ast the idle bounces from 1500-1200 constantly (found that fix here!!!).

This car also has had the timing belt replaced recently, and the head gasket replaced and valve seals replaced

So I guess I will drive it around as a 3 speed until I get my sons friend to rebuild the OD for me. :)

I will, believe me. My 17 year old bought a 92 Talon TSI with a G2 turbo for 200 bucks, delivered (yet another steal!). We bought a new timing belt auto-tensioner and installed the timing belt, that thing screams (it also screams I need a paint job!!).

Unfortunately, it has an oversized exhaust system (3"), so there is no downtube off the turbo (he said it will cost 250 bucks for one to fit, uugh), so the turbo hapilly loosens the oil filter every 20 minutes and it has to be tightened or it will lose a bunch of oil (already happened once).

I expect I will be hitting this site alot keeping these two cars zipping along.

i've done that  but only once

that is THE number 1 best feeling in the world. (this is the ONLY 1g I ever worked on) A guy thought his brand new 6-bolt motor was locked, so my buddy bought it for the chassis and trans to tube for racing. We got there, tried to start it and it just clicked. I had a random thought and grabbed my small ball peen hammer. While he tried to crank all I had to do was tap the starter solenoid once and crank, crank, crank, FIRE. The guy almost shit his pants. We got the car with a fresh 6-bolt, clutch and everything for $600.

When I was working on trannys (I don't know a lot, but I do know something), sometimes we would get a car with a similar issue cme in (no OD).
I don't know is the 1G's have a OD button to turn it on and off, but sometimes there was an issue with the switch, preventing it to go into OD. Even if there is no switch, some times it is just a simple electronic shifting problem that can be fixed for a lot less than a rebuild. You might want to take it to a tranny shop, and see what they can find. Just a thought.
Welcome, and nice find! :)

^ good idea. if that isn't the problem though it's usually just because of the end clutch. there is a link to a write up on how to replace the end clutch in the pinned FAQ

I had this problem when i put my 1g in a ditch (sad story). I Highly highly doubt the turbo is loosening the oil filter. Take the oil filter and cooler off. There should be one really big and long bolt that the oil cooler and filter sit on. Make sure that thing is screwed all the way in, and maybe lock-tite the bolt into place (don't lock-tite the cooler or filter).
