I recently bought a 2003 eclipse gt 5 speed and my service engine light came on, i had took it to the dealer i had bought it from and they checked it out seemed all the censors were fine. He had cleared it and said drive it for a few days if it comes on take it back but my only day off is friday and thats 4 days from now, wanted to know if its safe to drive or if im going to mess it up more. I never beat on the car or opened it up just normal driving.

I appreciate the help, thanks

What is the code? Have it read for free at Autozone unless you own your own OBD2 scanner that only costs $80.

"Is it safe to drive" really depends on the code you're getting.

Rule of thumb, as long as the check engine light (CEL) or service engine soon (SES) light are not flashing while driving you're usually ok for a few days. once they start to flash it means your pissin raw gas into your converter and its overheating/dyin. thats gonna be a expensive repair. Im assuming youll be getting a EVAP leak either large or small code. It's pretty common and they are a pain to trace down and fix.

Id go with what customs said and take it to an autozone. The light comes on for hundreds of reasons, many sever and many not. so the only true way to know is to check the code. I cant believe that they didnt check that at the dealer tho. Strange...

It's a Stealership man what do you expect? They clear it in the hopes that something will break and then you have to spend money there to get it fixed.

Are you sure that the paper work they gave you does not have a diagnostic charge saying something "Cust. states check engine light is on." Tech # diagnostics found P#### ? something along those lines...I mean you did pay them right?

Its true, swindlers they are. As i stated before, take it to autozone. They'll give you the code reader, fire that up and get the code. Then i guess its up to your technical experience to determine what has to be done. Once again, it comes on for a variety of reasons. Some just work themselves out, others you have to reset yourself.
