Hi Guys
I am new here, but have just been looking at a Pajero that we intend to buy, subject to an inspection.

Only problem that I have noticed with it is that there is quite a bit of oil sitting round the bottom of the gearbox bell housing. The top of the engine seems clean at the back, but the front is quite oily round the top of the rocker cover. (If there are rockers on the 2.8 TD!)
Couple of q's: Is the rocker cover gasket easy enough to change, or is it a complex job, ie taking out the AC heat exchanger? Does the oil around the back of the bell housing sound serious.
The engine sounds sweet enough, with no crankcase pressure to speak of when the engine was revved (finger over the dipstick test!)

Can anyone help or offer any advise on what to look for when buying a SWB 2.8 TD? Any pitfalls?

Cheers Guys
Tom

the bell housing might be just the lowest point for the oil to drip down to (if your unlucky, the worst it could be is the rear crank seal, which would be quite a lot of work for a $5 seal!).
My 2.5 may be different but only has the turbo intercooler on the top, which is 4 bolts and then the whole thing pushes to one side. But could it be the top front oil seal thats leaking? (front cam seal). Mine Paj has always leaked oil (from I don't know where!) so I know what you're looking at, a little patch of oil every where you stop!
I'm going to replace all the seals, including the rocker cover gasket, when I do the Cam-belt soon...
