Lots of the old ones wont thro codes for an irratic idle. Depending but mostly not. If the 2.0 DOCH engine , most these cases it is the Idle Air Control Valve. I have seen it on lots of these models Turbo and non , mine also. Some can be cured my cleaning the air passage that is there before the throttle butterfly to which it gets air.

Most times it needs to be replaced. When cold the IACV opens father than required , and doesnt close down accordingly , so the ECU "surges" the engine to stimilate the ISCV and try to get the correct desired idle. When is warmed up , is teh idle sumtimes a little lower than desired? Is it a 5 speed?
