Hi gang, Is it written anywhere that agrees with us that the 1.8l 4G37 is non-interference. I need to be able to show a repair shop as they are trying to rip off a friend by telling it is an interference. Looks like Mitchell and Alldata show it AS and interference. Get my delima? I've searched already but no definative sources found.

This may go to court so Please forward your best info!!!

Thanks in advance.

Ha...Thats probably the type of shop that sprays oil on your engine and tells you you have a leak. The 4g37 is non-interference, That shouldnt be to hard of a battle to prove.

Interference just means the valves can be hit by the pistons if timing is off. Thats why breaking a timing belt on the 4g63 = a ruined week. The 4g37 however being a non interference means you can break the timing belt all you want and it wont bend the valves. They just wont run until you reset the timing and put a new belt on it. I dont really have any links or anything but i'll see what i can find for you. If all else fails just ask a good dealer to write something up for you. Im 100% sure that its a non interference engine....Hands down.

Thanks for your responses so far. The shop is telling the lady that owns it that the engine is more than likely junk. I maintain it's an EZ and inexpensive fix. It's her only car and she aint got alot of money.

The (new) belt sliped a couple of teeth = 17 degrees.

Due to oil leeking from the cam seal? Tensioner is tight and new also.

Still as much I believe and no you guys are correct I need definative written confirmation of it being non-interference as Alldata and Mitchell both show it as a valve bender.

Thanks again.
