Hey guys, I'm new to the site, and I was thinking about building a motor for my 99' Eclipse Spyder. I was just wondering what kind of motor you would suggest. The build will be from the block up, regardless of the motor, and the swap will happen when the build is complete. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

why would you rebuild an engine and then swap it for a different one? am I just dumb because it's early or did you mean build a different engine to drop in your spyder?

which engine is in your spyder now?

He has the 4g64. Could keep that bottom end and put a 4g63 head on if he could do the fab work on the block.

Yeah, most shops will charge a couple hundred to do that work. And you will need a 4g64 timing belt and a spacer for the water pump. Then I believe either put 4g64 cam gears on it, or advance the 4g63 cam gears 1 tooth. Don't quote me on that.

That would be a cheaper option than finding a 4g63 block and you can get a bit more low end power out of it.

And by hybrid you mean the 4g64 bottom end w/ 4g63 head. I would really like to see one of those around here (cuz it'd prolly buy it then stroke it to 2.6 haha)

you can do 1 of 3 things:

1. build the 2.4L and turbo it
2. swap a 4g63 head on top of it (there is a write up in the pinned FAQ topic) and turbo it
3. sell me your crank :P

Well, what I think I'm going to do, after much research, is build a complete 4G63T out of the car, and then drop it in. I know it's possible, because that motor was available in the same year GS-T. I've already gotten leads to a complete engine, wiring harness, ECU, the whole deal... So, I think that's my plan for now. And who knows, I may have the other motor to part out when I'm done =P
