QUOTE(suprafast7 @ Aug 16 2008, 01:38 PM) Hi im new to these forums, I joined because im getting one of my dream cars next week. It's a 1995 5 speed 3000GT SL. And I wanted to know if I can converted into the legendary all wheel drive vr4. Is it possible? How much would it cost? and where can I get the parts?
Possible? absolutely. Practical? not so much...it would be much more cost effective to sell the SL and buy a VR-4. Also, you wont have tons of build time and headaches. If you really dont want to sell a car you just bought, maybe look into a TT conversion. The AWD conversion is what takes most of the time and money, so if you skip on that, it becomes much cheaper and more practical. but anyway, to answer your parts/price question, the easiest thing to do would probably be to find a donor car. A vr-4 thats been hit or has thrown a bearing or something.

QUOTE(suprafast7 @ Aug 16 2008, 04:49 PM) Alright that helped alot, so making it twin turbo will produce as much as hp as the vr-4? And yeah I know it would be much cheapier to just buy a vr4 instead but I barely had the money to buy it. I have another question my friend has a 1998 3000gt but it's automatic. He is wondering if he can make it a 5 speed standard. How much would this cost and what would he have to do to make it possible? thank you and sorry for so many questions. slightly more, actually, since the n/a engine has higher compression. Unfortunately, that limits the amount of boost you can run before having issues with knock. But there are solutions to every problem...;) MTX conversion: yes, very possible. Search the net and you'll be sure to find some write-ups. Just the major things; transaxle (obviously), clutch, flywheel, petal, axles, center console, cut a hole for the clutch petal, master/slave cylinders, lines...shifter and linkages...i know i'm forgetting something big...

We've done both 5spd swaps, and AWD Twin Turbo Vr4 swaps, etc, etc, etc. We're actually doing another Vr4 swap shortly... and probably one of the most bad-ass top to bottom renovations ever to go through this shop. HAHA
If you have any questions about either conversion, Hans or myself can help you, as well as EMC I'm sure :)
In all honesty though... it's really not so much of a do-it-yourself project... but certainly not impossible if you're 100% dedicated to doing it.
The only problem you will run into since it seems your lacking finances... is you'll need a donor VR4/stealth TT chassis.
And in all honesty... if you're JUST buying the car now, and already have plans to convert it... save yourself the headache and extra $$ (because yes, in the long run, it will cost you more $$), and just buy a Vr4.
save up a little more extra cash, and just buy a nice 1g Vr4. They're going for sub 6k in decent condition.

We usually charge around $5k to convert a car from fwd to awd which includes all parts and labor (for a 5 speed). Add another $4-5k for the turbo conversion (using a turbo engine). It would be worth it if you got a REALLY good deal on a SL.
Doing the AWD conversion is a lot of work, but you do get the benefits of cheaper insurance. Unfortunately, that insurance usually doesn't cover all of the stuff you just did to the car, so you will lose it all if it gets totalled.
Auto-manual conversions aren't all that bad to do. Parts required (off the top of my head)
manual trans (for his 98 he will want one from a 93+ model... if his is a SOHC engine, he will need one from a SOHC) clutch flywheel flywheel bolts clutch pressure plate bolts clutch slave cylinder clutch master cylinder line going from master to slave cylinder trans mount bracket axle jack shaft with bracket shifter assembly shifter cables clutch/brake pedal assembly shift boot with plastic trim piece shift knob
I'm pretty sure that all of the parts needed.
