I have a 1995 eclipse gst. I put a new belt on and was woundering, when you align the marks on the uper camshaft sprocks, should the oil pump be lined up to its proper mark, as well as the crankshaft pulley pointing to top dead center?

Please help I need to finish this today.

Thanks, John

the simplest answer is, align ALL timing marks the way they are supposed to be. cams, oil pump, and crank should ALL point to their own marks

So I have to align the crank pulley with the timing mark on the plastic outer cover? Why isnt there a mark behind the cover to align the crank pulley?

Thanks, John

Yeah, it sucks, but you gotta deal with it. I like to align it with the cover on, then take the cover off and before I start moving anything or taking anything else off, I use a paint marker to make a line on the sprocket and the block.

Also, don't be surprised if EVERYTHING lines up perfectly but the crank, and the crank will be off by like 1/2 a tooth. It's impossible to get that right. It's a proven fact that you will never get everything PERFECT because something will be off by half a tooth.

At the crank, it really doesn't matter two much because your crank spins twice for every one revolution of the timing gears. Therefore, if your crank is off by a 1/2 tooth, your cams are only off by a 1/4 tooth. You'll never notice, and neither will your engine. When that happens I like to retard the crank that 1/2 tooth. That way the cams are a little advanced.

Go forth and conquer fellow grease monkey!

there is a mark on the plate behind the crank sprocket that should face a pointy thing.

but like hmatt said the crank rotates twice so when you line that mark up. fit the timing cover and pulley before you put everything back together and make sure the pulley matches the mark on the cover. that way you aren't 180 out

Dang, I wish I would have seen that when I did mine. I had to take the cover off, then on a couple times before I decided to use the paint marker.

Oh well, I know for next time.

I wonder if he finished with this yet....
