so i decided the old infinity was just too plain, and its my birthday in a few days, so i decided i would get a new stereo. so i have a couple questions. didnt see them in the searches, so i decided id go ahead and ask. so first off, are sony receivers good? anyone have one that could let me know what they think of theirs would be great. the one im looking at is here http://sm.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item...U&tp=5685&avf=N
my next question is: what will that poor old clock pod be doing at the top of my dash? obviously, the most it will do is display the time, but does this thing have any affect on my new receiver?
also, is the receiver a job i could do myself (the sony supposedly comes with an installation guide, but if its a big job, im not gonna touch it, ill leave it to the pros)
last question (sorry for having so many) is, are sony door speakers very good? mine suck, to be blunt, and im tired of the raspy crap noise. i want something that can take a little beating, and will last a long time, but wont cost me an arm and a leg. im trying to keep this thing in the hundreds, not the thousands =]
thanks for any advice!

Ok.

A) Sony receivers are crappy and you would be better off with a Pioneer Premier for about the same price or a Blaupunkt.

B) the clock will only display the time now as you said, but it won't have any effect on your new headunit.

C) it is a very easy job to do, when you order it, the only other thing you'll need to do is go to Best Buy or something and get a wiring harness. But then you just wire the new one up to the headunit following the wiring diagram and that's the hardest part, from there on it's plug and play.

D) Sony speakers are shitty, Pioneer Premier once again or Eclipse are the better way to go and they are reasonably cheap as well.

Look the speakers up on http://www.sonicelectronix.com cause they are usually a little bit cheaper than Crutchfield. Any other questions let me konw.

Take off the clock and bring the bulbs into your local autozone or whatnot.

And please research before you post topics. I am not trying to be an ass, but I have seen about 20 sound system topics in the past month, and all are asking the same question.

That's a nice premier and should work good. But if that's the one you're looking at, don't buy it from the site you posted. Use this link.

Much cheaper.

about the raspy sound you were hearing from your speakers:

one major engineering flaw is that the center speaker that is in the dash (behind the clock pod) is sitting in direct sunlight most of the time so the speaker is very prone to dry rot and that will cause the speaker to crack and you will have a blown speaker. Simplest fix is to just disconnect the speaker DO NOT REPLACE THE SPEAKER any speaker you put there will do the same thing over time. I had the same raspy noise and lucky for me my brother is a car installer at best buy and he was able to warn me to not spend the money on a new speaker. you wont notice all that much of a difference in the sound other than there not being the raspy sound

try that and it might fix some of the noise

There is no sound difference when you take that speaker out or just disconnect it. That speaker is pointless even when it's brand new and not falling apart. But you're right just disconnect or take it out and you're better off.

actually ive already removed the front dash speaker, and dont plan on putting a replacement in. it still sounds very raspy, even with it removed. too much heck on the stock speakers i guess. i dont really play music very loud, so the previous owner must have. thanks for the looking-out though! and also thanks for the web link, saved me a ton of money. just ordered it, hopefully itll be in soon.

Good to know, and hope you really like it. I'm looking to get the Premier that's one step lower than yours. But if you have any questions on install let me know or let bobthecow know cause he is the smartest when it comes to car audio stuff.

my pioneer came in today. and i had my mechanic friend look at it. unfortunately (as expected) the wiring is totally different. so, has anyone installed a pioneer themselves? i have no car owner's manual (cheap bastards didnt give me one) so i need some major help.
and i found a bunch of stuff that honestly just made my head hurt trying to understand what goes where
so, im totally and utterly overwhelmed by trying to understand it all.
my question is, if i just replace speakers, sub, amp, and any other piece of crap stock infinity in my car, will that add more pain or less pain in making everything work smooth without having to drill holes in my dash for excess buttons and knobs and switches?
thanks for any help or any links.

They should have sent you the wiring harness if you ordered it from Sonicelectronix, and it should have came with some sort of instructions. But if you don't understand it, PM bobthecow and he can tell you how to wire it up, if he's feeling nice that is.

As far as replacing subs, speakers, etc....speakers are a piece of cake, subs I have some pictures of how I ran the wiring if you have any questions there, and if you're car came with the stock infinity amp then you'll want to get an integration harness so that your factory amp will still power your aftermarket speakers. Because with the infinity stock amp, you're getting 30watts of clean power as opposed to however many watts of dirty power your headunit will be putting out.

i didnt get a wiring harness, so ill have to contact them to see if they'll send me one. and just to make sure i understand this, if i just leave the stock amp in, everything will still work and sound fine?
the only reason i would have to replace it is if i had to.

Exactly, this is what you need in order for your stock amp to still power your stock speakers with your aftermarket headunit.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_12689_Metra+70-7003.html

That's what you need for that. And when you call sonic just tell them the headunit you ordered from them and the vehicle you're installing it into and tell them that you need a wiring harness for that headunit. Other than that for wiring PM bobthecow.
