I have 77 000 miles on my original 18" Dunlop tires ( 08 Lancer GTS ) It's time to get new ones and my question is : can i use 225/40/18 ? original size is 215/45/18. I know all about tire size calculator and all that, i'm just wondering if there will be no problem with tire preasure sensors and fitment on rim. Will be 225/40/18 much lower than originals ? If any of you wondering why i want to change sizes, 225/40/18 are about half prize of 215/45/18 and much more to choose from. Thanks.

should fit fine, however imo I would stick with 225/45/18 to keep the road noise to a minimum

+1

Also, the 45 sidewall is small enough as it is. Go any lower and you will risk damaging the rim when going over pot holes. I'd try to go bigger on the sidewall if possible.

Anybody know what is the biggest size you can do on a 18" rim for our cars without rubbing?

Yes, 77 000+. Changed them today, got Kumho, 225/40/18. Diference in only 6mm, that's about 1/4 inch. Very small diference. I already put 100+ miles on new ones, they are quieter.

But how do they ride compared to the stock tires? Rougher?

You should have e-mailed Dunlop about the tires & see if they could have sent you a discount coupon or something....really....77K out of tires that aren't really more than 40K best???? I bet they would be impressed.

I don't care if they are impressed or not, i wasn't impressed with their tires and don't want another Dunlops. I have put 60 000+ miles on all kind of tires, Bridgestones, Avons...No big deal. I made about 350 miles on new ones, i didn't notice any roughnes, they are quieter. There might be slight diference in gas mileage, maybe 1 or 2 mpg worse, but that's because they are wider, but i can't say for sure yet, to soon. By the way, i'm about 8 or 9 miles short of 77 777 miles, i'll take pic later today and post it here. So far no problems at all, only thing i ever changed was oil and tires ( yesterday ) Same brakes ( cut rotors at 50 000, they were shaky, put back on same pads, they are good for another 20 or 30k, i checked yesterday ) same belts, even light bulbs, can't complain. Never went to dealers inspection.
