Hey, i might be picking up an 97 eclipse gs-t here in a few days. He seemed like he was like 15 or something, and he knew nothing about cars. So i asked him if there was anything wrong with it and he said that it sometimes 'boggs' out when he drives. He wasn't really clear but he said that it boggs at around 3000 rpms, and if you don't give it a little gas it'll die if it falls down to idling range. I don't know much about eclipses, so i was just wondering if anyone new anything about this.

thanks

Thanks for bringing that up, the kid also said the the exhaust rattles, so i there might be a exhaust leak somewhere. Thanks, but could there be another reason, if the exhaust is not the problem?

Mod wise, the car is basically stock except for an intake. The exhaust on the other hand, is a piece of crap ebay special or something..., that's why its rattling.

Drives: 1996 Talon AWD. Built, but no longer drives: 1997 mitsubishi eclipse RS; 1990 Talon AWD; 1995 Talon AWD, 1997 Talon AWD. Seems like a pattern

it's probably a heat shield rattling. Ebay is actually a good place to find pipe

the "bogging" is probably because he put a boost controller to try to turn up the boost and it's knocking.

Can you be more specific with the symptoms? have you driven it?

I would do what they say, also check plugs, wires, fuel filter, clean the injectors.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a boost controller on it, but i'll check it and get back to you. I am going to go test drive his car today after he get's off school.

I was planning on replacing plugs, wires, and cleaning the injectors once i get the car. But, not too sure on the fuel filter, never messed with that before.

I'll get back to you guys once i drive the car today. thanks.

fuel filters aren't too difficult, at least not on cars that i have worked on. i am on my third car that i have bought, and have done changes on a couple before. a big thing to remember is to make sure the battery terminal is taken off (so the fuel pump is inactive) and to make sure the fuel lines are crimped BEFORE you take it off (my first couple times i ended up taking a shower in a very flammable substance....and i smoke lol) on an eclipse i dont know how difficult it is, i havent tried to get to mine on the galant yet.

Cigarettes + flammable substance = Pain and hospital bills.

Anyways, is there a guide on replacing or checking the fuel filter on the eclipse? like pics and steps and all that good stuff?

Well, if he put an aftermarket intake, he might have vented the BOV to the atmosphere, and blammo, bogging when he lets it fall in the RPM's. If you go look at it, take some pics of it, expecially under the hood and post them up!

Get some close ups of the BOV, the intake, and the throttle body for sure.

my gst used to bog down when i gave it too much gas. so i replaced the ignition coil and everything ran perfect. thats what i'd do is check all the ignition parts ex: plugs, wires, ignition coils, etc.

Okay so i drove the car today and it ran AWESOME! Okay so what he meant by "BOGGING" was that when you drive the car past 3K RPMS, and suddenly you go into neutral, the rpms would drop normally but instead of idling, it'll fall all the way and die. Any idea about this??

The car also has a BOV, i don't know what kind it is, but his dad got it for him, and it 'bolted' right on, he says. IDK what to think about that, but here are some pics.

So what can cause that rpm drop, the BOV?

Is it ME or WTF is his upper cooler pipe? No intercooler at all? That is some getto shit there man. Never seen a bov like that either.

ok listen there are going to be more replys which you need, BUT this cars NEEDS the complete upper cooler piping and use a stock bov and SMIC. I think that will 100% fix the problem.
