Hi Guys, I'm a newbie here and was hoping someone can give me some ideas. Just got me my first Eclipse - a 3.0 GT with 5 on the floor and 101K and I'm having an overheating problem. Temp guage will stay in the middle all day, but as soon as I turn on the A/C it graudually rises all the way to H. Turn the A/C off, and it comes back down. Flushed the system, put in new coolant, and even removed the thermostat but still same problem. It's kinda hot down here in FL so it's not easy riding with no air. I'm really hoping someone here has seen this before and can shed some light on what's happening. I'm inclined to go after the water pump as the culprit, but that's an expensive fix and I just can't see why the water pump would work fine with the A/C off but not with it on. Any ideas???

Might be a bad condenser and it's having to work harder to make the air cold. Therefore it would be taking more power from your accessory belt, hence making your engine work harder.

Just a guess but it's just logical thinking, but then again when are Mitsubishi's logical?

Make sure both fans come on when you turn a/c on and that they are spinngin with force. If not then that is definitly a problem. Second take a hose and wash off the front of the condenser and radiator to get any leaves, pollen/cotton, or that crap off. If that doesnt work make sure you have the air deflectors still on the car, on some vehicles they make a difference.

If the condenser is making the engine work harder, isnt 4000 rpms pretty rough on the engine, i think is when u turn on ur A/C, its something electrical wrong and its shutting off ur fans which is the only thing that will cause ur engine to heat up pretty fast!! If the condenser is making the engine work harder it will overheat, but slowly. Check which way the fans are spinning when the A/C is turned on, the switch might be inverted, very rare but very possible if any job was done on the A/C and that could be it

Thanks much for the suggestions guys. I'm heading outside right now and taking a garden hose to that condenser. Not sure it it's related but I also have a CEL that's throwing the code P0141, something about the 02 HEATER CKT BANK #1, SENSOR #2. Both fans do come on when I turn on the A/C, they seem to look like they're running strong. As for the Air Defelctors...I'm not sure...I don't know exactly what the air deflector is...I'll search for a pic online.

Thanks Man, I did have some work done recently that required them to disconnect a bunch of stuff under the hood. Should the fans be blowing onto the radiator, or should they be blowing away from it?

the fans should pull air through it meaning all the force should be pulling from the front of the car against the engine.

Air blowing--- >

Hope you can figure that out.
