Hi guys!

Recently, I had a top hose leak which I overlooked and almost cooked my engine. The coolant was totally dried and the engine just died. Luckily, I was driving quite slowly around the neighborhood.

I replaced the coolant and the engine runs fine, but the damage is now manifesting itself with a daily coolant loss. I suspect that the head gasket is gone, but I don't see any smoke coming out of it.

What's obvious is that when I stopped driving (parking), the coolant can be seen dripping/leaking from underneath the body, from right about the transmission sump. Now, could the coolant leak into the tranny box and seep out through the sump gasket?

If the tranny sump has never leaked, so, where is it coming out from? I can see the coolant pipes coming in & out of the tranny sump. but no leaks around those.

Would a can of radiator leak stop do the job, or what else can I try besides a major engine overhaul?

Thanks for sharing your ideas.

NUR

I had the same problem with my 3500 quadie.
Usually what is leaking (when it drips from where you are saying) is the hose that runs under the vally cover from the water pump.

I had the same problem recently, which we discovered when doing plugs, water pump and timing belt etc...
Unfortunately for me, I also had a blown head gasket, so we went the hole hog, did the heads, lifters, radiator, all hoses etc etc etc. total cost $4,400.

OUCHH!!

Thanks for sharing.

I think I'll just sit the truck at home for a while until I can find a proper time to do the timing belts thingy together with the pumps, pulleys, gaskets, seals....you know, the whole enchilada. The o-ring is leaking too and the belts are going to be due sometimes soon.

At this age of the truck, a lot of things are wearing out faster than you could find the time (and money) to replace them. But, it's a great beast to own.

Greetings frum Thailand!!!

Yes as stated yeah the o-ring on the recovery pipe that goes into teh bac of teh waterpump has gone frum the heat. As stated the coolant drips down the valley thru the back of the engine and goes down the area where the tranny bolts to the engine block. They are pretty tough engines, i have not seemn this condition happen alot , usually just frum poor maintinance or accidental overheating.

But can be remedied when replacing the water pump

Hi Nur,

Good to see someone from Malaysia. Sorry for hijacking your thread but I wanted a piece of advice from you since you own a V45.

I have just seen one and the owner agreed at RM26k. It's a one owner car, 1996, CBU with
airbags, abs, leather seats and sunroof. The mileage is 120k. The condition
is very good, smooth engine. Just wanted to hear from other people whether
it's worth buying. What's the maintainence like? Thanks in advance.

In my advice , with normal service the vehicles are excellent and can take alot of off road and on road use. My uncle has had his since new a 1995 and 1996 and he has and i serviced it as usual over the years and never had one issue with it besides the waterpump seal leaking after over 320,000 k miles on the 1995. Other than that normal wear and tear .

Hi Bairnsdale64 and KiT TeUng 2549

After much pondering and sleepless nites, it's now comforting to know that the problem is not so serious at all. You both are correct on the water pump o-ring being busted and coolant flowing out over the valley. Phewww! I thought the tranny was a goner.

Also the radiator cap was old and loose, so I got that replaced. Apparently, the coolant just stopped flowing out and it's not disappearing anymore. HMMMmmmmmmm................................there's still something not right with the o-ring. But, i'll get to that later.

As for Mr. Raman7, I'll say, buy the Pajero at RM26k, coz that's a steal man. Maintenance wise, I'd say it's low, but could be expensive when due. I do my own and sourced for recond parts and parallel importers.

Good Luck, YOU WILL LOVE THE CAR, but not the consumption.
