..

I'm having a problem with my mirage...

I'm having to put in a quart of oil ever 100 miles?!?

well I'm pretty sure this isn't right...lol

I'm not seeing any leaks, the oil doesn't appear to be going into my coolant and I only notice smoke when accelerating off of stop when engine is not at full operating temp or if I red line it while in park .. no smoke screen or anything while driving

the plugs were oily when I replaced them....I also replaced the pcv valve, which was oily and so was the nipple to the intake manifold.

I just bought the car actually so I'm figuring I got screwed, but the car only has about 118,xxx miles on it..

is there any way to tell where the oil is coming from that's being burned? I.E. : rings, valve seals, ect.?

or could it be some other problem?..

the car idles fine, accelerates fine..(alittle bucky on hills?) gets the proper gas millage.
In general runs like an awesome little car but I have to add oil every hundred miles....anyone have any ideas?

have a compression test done

the valve stem seals might be hardened
and letting oil seep into the cylinders

they can be replaced without removing the head

Also , neglecting to replace the pcv valve routinely can be the cause of high engine oil consumption. People vastly overlook it but the pcv valve is a very important thing .

I'll do a compression test as soon as possible ( read :as soon as I have some money >.> )

I also did replace the pcv valve and I checked it and it's working properly...or did the previous owner do damage by not replacing it soon enough?

oh and unfortunate update**

on a hill on my way to work today I decided to stomp it hard to see what happened.....Dark gray (blue I'm assuming) billowed out... this probably points to bad rings huh?...

anyone know how much a shop would roughly charge to do a rebuild?...or even to install a "new " engine if i found them one?..hoping it wolnt come to all that but I'd liek to weigh my options and start saving..

Caveat emptor

yu see the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) helps to regulate the internal pressure of the engine. A clogged pcv valve can raise the internal pressure of the engine , causing oil leaks where the oiling system is under most pressure , like areas with seals , also causing alot of pressure in the upper end of the engine in the cylinder head area , slowly weakining the valve stem seals and causing oil to escape into the cylinders via the valves.

Also the pcv valve can malfunction in another way. The pcv valve has a spring loaded valve in it to help regulate its suction. Yu see the PCV valve is hooked directlly to the intake plenum , which is a source of high vacuum . which is why it has the spring valve internally of it , to help regulate the vacuum sorce going thru it. An old pcv valve , teh spring can be wea frum age and the valve does not properly restrict/modulate the intakes vacuum sorce and so it has a high draw , and in these cases making it suck small amounts of oil thru it into the intake system and causing a noticeble oil loss over time between oil changes.

How does the engine run? Fairly good? Just has that oil consumtion issue? Yu mentioned the plugs were oily. Were they oily frum oil in the spar plug tubes? Do yu have teh 4G93 1.8?

But if the inside core part was oil, the side of the plug thats in the cylinder, i would definatly do as Chain Rattle said and perform a cylinder compression test. The piston rings (compression ring and 2 oil rings) may be extremely worn frum lack of proper oil changes , and small amounts of oil are bypassing into the cylinders .

NM i just saw yu have the 1.5

well I didn't check the old pcv valve before I chucked it...but it is sucking air when removed from the valve cover but hooked up to the intake and rattles when you shake it so i think the new one is good..

I haven't pulled the new plugs yet, but all the threads were oily when I removed the old plugs (part thats inside the engine that is)..and three of the spark plug holes were clean on the outside; the number one plug was the worst..

The engine runs great...idles fine, seems to have good acceleration (for a 1.5l anyway  ) but just is eating oil more quickly then I'm comfortable with ... I'm almost going trough two quarts in a week.

The oil around the threads could have jujst come frum oil that had leaked along there frum the valve cover and when yu unscrewed the plugs its went along the threads. If i am correct the pcv valve is located hmm i thinkk close to the timing cover side of the valve cover. If the pcv is bad it will cause lots of oil to go into the number one cylinder , because the vacuum hose that the pcv valve is hooked to connects near the number 1 air passage in the intake plenum
