My '93 Summit exhibited exact same behavior since I got it! It kept getting worse, to a point that I started worrying about getting stranded…
Since I had a spare parts car, I decided to install ignition switch from it. Little did I know that ’95 cars were TOTALLY different in this regard (I believe that is because they incorporated air bags)! I ended up spending over 4 hours but I eventually made ’95 ignition lock work in ’93 car. It isn’t trivial and I do not recommend this swap to anyone.
I did it because I was stubborn, had a spare car and I really liked the ’95 style of lock (“push the key” to release, on ’92-94 you have push a button).
However, when I had the original lock out of the car, I noticed that a few electrical connections to the lock cylinder were loose! I didn’t confirm it, but there is a good chance that I could have just tightened things up and fixed the problem, avoiding 5+ hours of needless work.
So, my advise is to first check (wiggle) two electrical connections to the lock cylinder to see if they are loose. You will have to remove plastic trim pieces to get to the cylinder.
And if you want to get a new (used) lock, make sure that it is from ’92-‘94 car!
