All of you have just confirmed what I have always truely believed.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
I see a lot of people around here (Salt Lake City, Utah) that do some of the most incredibly stupid things.
Case and point: While washing my car today (just finished a rattle can base coat clear coat on the roof, and sanding to repair the messed up sundamaged paint, came out great) two idiots in hondas raced past. BUSY SUNDAY WITH PEOPLE OUT COMING HOME FROM CHURCH. The invetible happend. Couple minutes latter, ambulances, cop cars, firetrucks.... you get the point. Perfect example of stupidity.
I have always loved Eclipses. From day one, 1999 when I first got my 94 base Eclipse, I have always loved these cars. Yeah, it's no turbo, no 300whp screamer, but DAMN was it fun! I realy learned how to drive with that car. I had some scary times with that car (I was almost the pin ball in between a concrete barrier and a semi on an icy road once. All said afterwards was "F**K!"), and no, I was NOT going fast.
I drive a truck professionally now, and my driving skillshave increased big time. BUT, I still am not going to go 100+ in rush hour traffic.
You want to go fast, learn everything there is to know about your car, how it handles, responds in different conditions, how it brakes, and then relate that to the mechanics of the vehicle itself.
If you still want to go fast, do what many do, get a helmet, and go to an open track day at your local track, and have fun, whee safety is #1.
My 95 GS isn't moded at all (Eibach springs don't count IMO). I'm not gonna win any races. BUT, it is fun.
Be safe, know your car, know your limits, and have fun.
I will always believe, that most important safety device is, the drivers head. Use it and be smart, so we don't have to read about you in the obituaries.
I haven't been here to long, but I am learning everyday. I just had to comment on this. It is EXCELENT advice, and I agree, it should be a "Welcome" thread that people should read.
On a different note: EMC, I would LOVE to pick your brain for a couple of days, and take some of that knowledge you have. lol

EDIT: I just remembered this, and thought you guys miht ge aakick out of it. This is an actual question on a written test to get your drivers license in Austria.
How do you get into a car?

You all just failed.
You get into a car, sober.

Wow.

Now those are stories. I started out as a Honda mechanic assistant at a local race shop by my house. We worked on Hondas and Acura only.
Our main concern was suspension and response.Handling was our main priority, manuvering and the apex.

Once I got into the DSM world I fell in love with the turbo.
I respect the turbo and now after what I read, I respect it more.

we all gotta start somewhere and none of us jumped out of the vagina with the knowledge of a master mechanic it takes time. I live in Logan Utah and its not a big town by all means and everyone is all about big trucks so its extremely hard to find anyone in the tuner world but i stayed patient and looked for opportunities everywhere and i now have a dream job. this guy that used to work for my dad doing construction i remember about 7 years ago was into cars but i didnt get into cars till i was about 16 and im 19 now. my dad still had his phone number so a few months ago i stopped by his house and we talked for a few hours and now i work for him. we make fiberglass parts for all types of sports cars mainly FD rx-7's we have done things from wide body 350z's to making a miata look like a bmw i thought i would never have a opportunity to do something like this but it all started by a simple conversation and now i have my dream job. dont give up looking for people who do the same things as you it takes time to find the right people but when you do they have friends who like the same things and it just starts to open up opportunities and knowledge.

Don't ever stop trying! Like they said try and see if you can sweep up in a local shop. Just being around cars is a great way to learn.

I've been around cars my entire life, my dad sells BMW's. So i walked around in the shops and talked to the techs when i went in with him. If you have genuine interest in something that someone else has made a career or hobby out of, they will gladly help you.

My 2 Cents: At Tischer (Dad's old workplace) one day, a guy came in to pick up his brand new Porsche Carrera GT. 600,000$; 605HP; sounds like a good day right? Gets it onto the street, no sooner than he pulls out, he takes off to about 85 and collides with a parked semi. oops...

Everyones level of driving experience is different. And you have to modify accordingly. having 700HP doesn't mean anything if you cant stop it, or control it.

I think this thread should be put into the welcome e-mail that they send to you. These are they guys that you should really take your advise from.

Semper-fi all

it's also a way to get great deals. because we were pretty good friends with those guys at the time we tested their baby kahuna set up for the SRT on ours. Our data from the track is the reason they started to put a 4" surge ring on that turbo. we had trouble with it spooling to quick and surging

 Everyone here is on the same level, using your head is the number one priority. I wish more people that I know/met from high school were like this.- (i just graduated)- Mostly it consists of all the rich kids, mommy and daddy has a viper, buys them a evo, or a civic si etc. and they use mommy and daddy's money to go have bolt ons like turbos etc. stand around with their hoods up and act like their working on their cars and dissing people with rides they actually bought them selfs. while the middle class kids actually bust ass and work on their own car, buy their own car and therefore become more knowledgeable, more cautious and level headed because it's a car they bought with their own money, their more willingly to give people advice unless your a douche bag like EMC said. Unlike the rich kids, they flip their car then mommy and daddy buys them a nicer car. Greed is what kills/hurts people. I wish everyone was considerate as you guys, street racing on the road in heavy traffic in front of a school just to show off in front of a crowd of kids, just to show everyone that your car's the s***. Whatever, your car might be admirable, but that certainly doesn't make you admirable

Interesting read! I've never pursued horsepower myself, and actually felt I was getting a little high-on-the-hog with the GSX Turbo back in '90 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ! 2000cc and almost 200HP -- WOW! Of course, I was coming from a dead 1.5L Honda Civic CVCC at the time (loved that car though -- fun to drive and GREAT gas mileage (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) .)

Cars with power exceeding 250HP were a bit foreign to me, let alone these monsters you fellows are discussing. I definitely hadn't considered the problem of tire adhesion. I'm familiar with the traditional drag scene and the crazily spinning rear wheels and soft fat slicks. I've watched a few funny car and rail runs in the past, but I never really connected the spinning wheels directly with the power. Basically, if you've got serious power on tap, you either have a VERY contained foot under ALL road circumstances, or you're a serious danger to all around you -- including yourself. Interesting! For the first time I understand what "going sideways" actually means!

Fortunately for me, I thoroughly enjoy the 'performance' afforded by my fleet as it stands (and rarely tap into even that), so I guess I'll continue to be a spectator (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) !

it is quite exhilerating to launch an awd car, not be able to see the road until you shift and watch the windshield wipers mysteriously go across the windshield in an attempt to make you slow down. its almost like the car is tossing it's arms in the air as if on a roller coaster (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

i hear you guys and all but i learn how to drive in a 300 hp infinti g35 and im getting a EVO X and i plan on getting 500 or 600... i still dick around on the street but i keep it to a minimum and we only race on empty streets and i do take my current cars to the track but its not always open so we improvise (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) and i have driven 500 hp cars and loved every minute of it (i learned how to drive stick on a 450 hp evo 6). I love hp but i think i will cut it at 600 hp for my Evo X and you will see that car on the street and on the track. (i dont have to drive fast to beat people in the street just a quick 0-80 will do most people give up after they get blown off the line) ps im in high school and its not a street racer thing its a addiction to speed and a ego that wont let somebody disrespect you car.

Now that scares me, a high schooler with an admitted addiction to speed, an ego problem and a fast car... glad i live far away (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)
maybe you can drive, but my only experience is teenagers + fast cars = crunch, and teenagers + fast cars + egos = CRUNCH. lol my cousin went through i think 4 cars before he was out of school
