Hey guys,

I'm a new owner of a Eclipse and I wanted to get some opinions and advise from you guys. actually I pick it up tomorrow (saturday)

about the car, it's a98 Spyder GS with 100 k miles on it, that runs quite well. the price with tax and everythign is $5200 cdn.

I just wanted to know what I'm getting into

I've done some research and hear the 420a engine can be a bit troublesome, but I can't find much on the 4g64 engine. does these 2 engine have similar problems?

I've owned my share of problematic cars, so I've learned over the years to do all PM's on the cars religiously. are there things I should be looking for? or keep an eye out for?

and the last question. the place I bought it from offers extended warrenty on the drive train. is it a good idea to purchase one for these cars? I normally do the work on my own, but when it comes to bigger things I have to send it to a shop.

the warraty are as follows

-24 month/24,000 kms = $670 ($1500 claim max and $90 deductable)
-24 month/40,000 kms = 790 ($2500 claim max 90 ded)
-24 month/ unlimited mileage = 890 ($2500 claim max 90 ded)

Thanks for reading, I tend to babble on and on... hahah.

sorry, couldnt' help it. As far as reliability you have a good car. the drivetrain warranty seems a little rediculous though if you have to pay $670 and can only claim $1500 with a $90 deductable. so if you ever use it, you actually paid them $760 already, and the fix might only be $500.

I never buy extended warranty's on something thats used, but that's just me.

sorry I meant claim max per visit

I usually don't buy extended warrenty for things since I can do 70% of the work myself. but I thought if it's a really problematic car I should

I would only get it if there seems like there might be a problem. If the engine blows up it is going to cost you more then $1500 to have a shop put one in. In that case it would cut the cost down some but otherwise if nothing goes wrong you spent that money for nothing. I have bought them in the past for the peace of mind but I have only ever used it once. I had a blown intake manifold gasket and they wanted to charge me 6 hours ($80/hr) + parts to fix it. The one I bought didnt have a max claim so in the long run it was worth me paying the deductible to have it fixed.
