i like the '93 myself...pop-up lights, 25-spline, 4-bolt engine w/forged crank...
but it depends what you want. The '94+ have the 6-speed and stronger t-case, and different styling. '96 goes to the OBD-II ECU.

My prefrences, if you want 1st gen looks, go '93. if you want 2nd gen looks, go '94 or '95 for emissions reasons. If you want gen 2.5, go '97, because the it's easier to mod than the '98. and if you want a '99 good luck finding one

but that said, if you lined 9 VR-4s up, 1 from each year, and told me i could drive one away for free, i'm taking the '99  ...then '97, then '93

i think 99 takes the cake. its the reason so many people do a 99 front end conversion. BUT some people prefer a 5 spd over a 6 spd. makes for less shifting in a race. you can take 3rd gear up to 125 or so in the 5 spds. BUT a 6 speed will have better top end. its all up to preference.

I'd say 99 IMO. but the pop up lights have their apeal too. i have a 98 and a 92 (92's a stealth) and i get MORE compliments on the 98, (maybe cuz its cherry) but its also got a better new look to it. but i prefer the 92 as its more MY style.

well, technically the fastest 3/s *should* be the '96 Stealth TT, which had the Z15 chassis (no AWS) which reduced the weight to 3671lbs.
The lighest VR-4s were the '97 '98 and '99, which all weighed 3737lbs. So, on that basis, they *should* be the fastest in stock form. But the fact is meaningless becasue who leaves their VR-4 stock anyways :D

Late 93 with the 4-bolt and extra good bits for me, then the 99.

I like the 1 gen Stealth body style (mine is a 92 R/T), but I hate the hatch/fin lol...On mine I swapped the hatch to a 3k from a 93 and painted the whole car dark metallic blue, and bought some miglia 1000 wheels...I like the dodge body styling a bit more than mitsubishi (minus the hatch). I only drive it for looks and everyone who sees it thinks it must be a rocket lol...It does look pretty badass though :) I think putting the mitsu hatch on gave me the best of both worlds, but thats just me

in 93 mitsu changed to a 4-bolt main bearing cap girdle for the VR-4. The original used 2-bolt caps with stiffening stays on the middle 4 bolts.

Unless you're going to be pushing TONS of HP this is meaningless, as i dont know of anyone pushing the 2-bolt beyond it's limit. But it's nice to have that extra security.

I think the only ones with AWS are 1990-1993
The exhaust is either sport or tour mode, and was on until 1994
The ECS was taken out in 1995... or was in 1996

I think all these are right, but I am not 100% sure.

I think that the ECS and AWS were a bit overrated, but they are certainly nothing to look over.

All VR-4s have AWS. The tunable exhaust was ended in '94. The ECS was ended part way through '95 (cars with an electric sunroof had no ECS, cars with the manual crank glass roof had ECS)(exept for Emily's :P )

ECS usefullness...I used to live in upstate NY where the roads are terrible. I dont know what i would have did without it. The difference isn't huge, but it's noticable and it makes the ride tolerable on imperfect surfaces IMO.

The tunable exhaust is basically a butterfly valve that routes the exhaust either through the main muffler (in tour mode) or through just a resonator (in sport mode). Mitsu claimed it made a difference in power at the cost of noise. I notice the noise difference, but dont notice any power gain. Possibly becasue over a certain RPM the butterfly opens anyways and the system reverts to sport mode, or possibly because the gain is just too small to nitice.

EDIT: i'll post up a thread a bit later about all the year to year changes and such. theres some interesting stuff for anyone with a few minutes to read it over.
