A week ago I replaced the valve cover gasket and I noticed that the timing belt had a ton of play in it, despite the fact that it was replaced about 15k ago. I got everything back together, and just checked the belt again today and its nice and perfectly tight. Does this make sense?

yea, they do that. depending on where the cams stop when you shut the engine down they might roll back slightly towards each other and cause some looseness in the belt

Yeah, that and if you haven't jumped a tooth or had it screw up in 15K, you are probably good man. I wouldn't worry about it.

Question: Does the tensioner get loose or is it a lifetime part?
I was just hearing a very soft noise under my hood yesterday like it was a loose belt but it went away.
Thanx!

they get "fatigued" over time and can allow excess slack during operation

Which is bad and is why the tensioner is to be replaced every timing belt change

Saving 100$ now could cost 1000$ later. Just wait for the next paycheck to roll along and replace it then. In the meantime take it slow. 16 valves all bending at the same time isn't a pretty noise.

Well, it has been said that you are safe if you replace the tensioner every-other timing belt change. Soooo.... They are good for 120K.

You can skimp on it for now, but I STRONGLY recommend that you change it when you have the money.
