Hello Everyone,

My Car: 1992 Mitsubishi 3000gt SL

Issue: Car will not start without popping clutch. For the longest time I would just unplug the battery cables every time I stopped and turned the car off. Then when I got ready to leave, I would plug the cables and it would start, but sluggish start. Now, I unplug and plug the cables, but the car still won't start until I push it and pop the clutch. I hear a click when I turn the key, but no ignition. Once it is on, it stays on until I turn it off. Then Same thing all over.

Anyone know what causing this to happen? Your help is greatly appreciated.

i put the battery on a charger and it shows not completely dead. Then I charge it up and it still gives the same problem. Do you think it is the alternator or starter? When I plug the battery, and even when it don't start, all the power works (lights, radio, ac, etc).

+1

after a battery goes dead once it will never be quite the same again. Even though it may hold a charge, it will go dead much quicker and it wont be able to deliver the cranking amps needed to turn the motor.
If you go to a place like autozone or advance auto they will test it for free, but i'm with EMC. Time for a new one.

Thank you all for the reply. I will check it at lunch today and post an update after. Let's cross our fingers and hope it isn't something more than that. I got the battery at Autozone, so I think they can replace it for free if it is bad. Thanks again!!!!!

When you turn the key do you hear a clicking noise?

Does the engine try to turn over, IE crank?

Ouch. Any idea how much that would cost to fix? Is it easy to replace myself?

Jack the car up unbolt the under plastics.

Unbolt two bolts on the passenger side of the the transmission Then its a clip off wire and unbolt a power wire and pull the starter out of the driver side of the transmission.

Reverse to put back in. You will need to jack the car up.

Before you take it out just make sure the connections are actually connected to the starter and tap on the starter with a hammer. It might start up. Also disconnect the battery when your playing with the starter.

Sweet. Thank you very much. I will jack it up and see if I can hit it with a hammer first. Then I will take it out if that dont work.

Do you know where I can find a picture of this to help guide me?

When your looking up at the car from the underside. You will see the transmission and this missile looking thing with some wires attatched that is your starter I'll try to get a page from the manual up.

number 1 is the starter
Number 2 is the driver side axle. I noted this only so you could get a bearing on where everything is.

does it sometimes start at random when you turn the key?

i ask because i had a simular problem, starting troubles out the ass. went threw 2 batteries and a brandnew starter. and then it started doing it again. jumping it didn't seem to help much, but sometimes it did. so this threw me for a loop.

after checking every cable i could i came to the 7th wire comming off the disributer. the one that goes to your "ignition relay" i think its called. after pulling it i realized it was chared to shit on the inside. replaced it for like 4 bucks and never had a problem since.
