I have read in other threads, that several other cars besides the Eclipse RS/GS use the 420a, such as a Dodge Neon.
Donor Eclipse/Talons are getting harder to find, but Neons are plentiful. You see where I am going with this?
I want to do a 420aT build, and I am wondering if a 420a from a Neon with a manual trans would slide into my 95 GS.
I looked at a trashed Neon (the engine was completly intact and undamaged), but the valve cover listed it as a SOHC, and it looked nothing like the 420a in my GS. I am thinking it was a different year, or a base model, or something else entirely.
Is there a specific year I should be looking for? Even if I do find one that works, what kind of exxtra mods might I have to do, to make it work in my 95 GS manual?
Then again, should I just bag the whole idea, and forget it?
Any kind of info would be great, even if it is jst pointing me in a direction that might lead to some anwers.

That's an '04 SRT-4 Engine... looks kinda like it would fit.

There's an '05...
http://www.n-gram.com/images/srt4/engine.jpg
Theres an engine out of the bay, and it looks promising...

NOTE: The head is backwards compared to the 420A. Intake is towards the front of the engine, and the exhaust it toward the rear. Also, it seems they are SOHC...

If you want an engine from a neon that will just bolt into your car and is the same you need to find a Neon R/T. My recommendation though is find a Dodge Avenger. Any 2.0L avenger from 95 - 99 has the same engine as our cars but I don't know if the trans are the same internally. They might have different gear ratios and what not.

Your other option would be to find a SOHC 420a engine and do the DOHC head swap on it.

srt engine WILL NOT fit without major mods.

I think that the SOHC neons had the same block just sohc head as the 420a. the DOHC neon also used the A588 not the 420a. it definately does have the same block the head is just backwards. I'm pretty sure any DOHC neon from 95-99 will have the right one

So I could take a SOHC, 95 - 99 Neon engine, put my 420a head on it, and be fine?
What about the bolt patern for the trans? Will it mate up right, or would I have to use the Neon trans as well?

You should just be able to use the Neon flywheel and clutch, and slide the transmission onto it from there, but I am not sure. As for the head, I don't see why not.

You will also need all the front end things like timing belt, timing cover, etc. I know the 420a engines in an Avenger have the same bolt pattern for the trans so theoretically your trans should mount right up. When I put the engine from an avenger in my car everything bolted up just fine. I got my engine from an auto car and my clutch bolted right onto the autos flexplate.

I don't know for sure about the SOHC engines,, its just what i've heard. but the DOHC engines do work for sure. I put a neon 5-speed in my eclipse RS but the front mount is different on the neon bell housing. you will have to fab a bracket that will bolt to the front trans mount on your eclipse. I did a shitty job but it worked

Just out of curiosity does anyone know if the bell housings on a Neon trans could just be switched to an eclipse bell housing to have the front trans mount be right?
