Hi all, I just purchased a '95 3000gt from a friend. The gas gauge does not work though. My friend said that when it rained hard one day it suddenly worked but the next day it was not working again. He said he thinks it is a bad ground wire in the rear of the car. I have not getten to look at the problem yet but I was looking for some suggestions from people who know more about these cars than me.

This is my first 3000gt so I don't know much about the car. But I am a NATEF certifed mechanic with access to lifts and any tool you could name so it won't be hard to drop the tank or anything along those lines.

Any suggestions are greatly appriciated.

Thank you,
Charlie

This is a typical problem on these cars and 9 out of 10 times it is a faulty sending unit. The sending unit is inside the gas tank on the fuel pump asembly. You can not purchase the sending unit seperate, only the whole assembly which is like $500. The only way to be sure is to pull it out of the tank and test for a change in resistance as you lift the floater up and down. The access to the assembly is in the trunk floor on the passenger side.

also you don't need to drop the tank, just 6 8mm bolts on the top of the assembly, and the feed line underneath the car. You will need a 14mm flare nut wrench and a 19 mm open end wrench to get the feed line off underneath.

Be careful, the feed line likes to bend and break and then you will need to retrofit a new line and fittings or buy a new pump assembly.

Ah. I'll test it and see. If in fact it is the sending unit and have to replace the whole pump assembly I have a feeling I'll put that at the end of my list of things to do. Having a working gas gauge isn't worth that much.

But thank you for the suggestions. And I'll check it and see if the sending unit is in fact the problem and write back with the results.

Ok, so sorry I have not responded on the topic in a LONG time. But I had the sending unit out and tested it and it is working fine. I tested all of the electrical componants from the sending unit to the d-16(I believe it is called I can't remember) intermediat connection inside the kick panel under the passengerside dash and its getting full power. Since I fiddled with it the gauge has begun to move when put gas in it. This leads me to believe there is nothing wrong electrically but rather the gauge itself is not functioning properly. If anyone has any other thoughts it would be appreciated.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Charlie
