Hey guys, I did do a search on this and found some good info but I still have a question.

I bought this Eclipse 1.8L about 4 days ago, I had time last night to work on it and I did a compression test. It showed 148 across the board. (I dont have a Haynes manual, so IDK if thats good.) Now, the car still blows blue smoke. Before I either have to replace the piston rings or Valve stem seals, is there anything that I can try to maybe make the blue smoke stop? For example, SeaFoam, Oil additives, etc. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. Just fyi, the car didnt smoke when I purchased it.

All I did was replace the spark plugs, clean the throttle body, and add Fuel Injector cleaner. I did notice that when I unplug the MAS the car runs alot better, and when its plugged in the car sputters @ idle and accelerating.

Please lmk if yall could help. Thanks

Luis. :P

it's possible that the sensor is bad. do you have anyone near you to swap theirs in and see if it runs better?

148 is kinda low. I am going with your piston rings.

No I dont know anyone around here that has one that I can test. Unless theres a nice person here that lives near Harrisburg PA? :blush-anim-cl:

OH CRAP!!! I was kinda hoping that it wasnt the rings. Now my car would have to sit, once again, til I mess with it. DSMs suck. I mean Ive officially owned every type of Eclipse. Ive owned a 1gn 4g63-T GSX, and 1gn GS-T, 2gn N/A Dohc, and back to 2.0 4g63 N/A, and now a 1.8L. And every single one of these cars has had major mechanical issues.

The 1.8L is so much smaller and looks alot easier to work on though. So I might actually go ahead and try to fix it. :57:

Ok, now Im really confused..... I start up the car tonight and it fired right up and everything and at first the idle was @ 1500 but when it started warming up it went down to 850-900. And the funny thing is, is that the MAS is plugged in and its not sputtering at all? But the CEL is on. I wanted to see if my TPS was functioning correct so I loosened it up and tried adjusting it and nothing happened? So I unplugged it, and nothing happened. The car just kept idling at the same RPM. And the car now smokes white. Not bright white but like almost grayish. I shined a really bright shop light at it to make sure. What is going on with this car? One minute the car blows blue smoke and sputtering, the next day the car runs great, but CEL, TPS not working and grayish smoke? Anybodies guess is as good as mine. :whistling:

The idle starting out high is normal when the motor is cold. If your compression is that bad, You will want to do a rebuild anyway. I don't care if your seeing orange smoke, rebuild that fucker. lol. As for the white smoke, usually that is a good sign your head gasket is faulty, but it could be a collection of other things as well.

Thank you very much for your input. Im going to be putting a parts list together in order to rebuild the entire engine. According to partsdinosaur.com its not even going to be as expensive as I thought.

A stock rebuild normally isn't all that expensive, as long as you do the work yourself. When it comes to rebuilds, most of the money goes to labor.

Ok heres an update. I Marvel Mystery oiled the car, and I added Lucas cleaner to the gas. I drove the car around for a while, then I shut if off and drained it. Talk about black oil. I didnt see any coolant mixed in it so thats a good thing, plus my coolant resovior wasnt bubbling. Well, then I replaced the oil with some 10w40 oil. I also replaced the fuel filter that was never replaced. I replaced all the ground wires with thicker wires (not sure what guage).

I start up the car and it fires right up and no CEL. But the exhaust smoke is still whiteish. So Im going to be saving some money for a rebuild. I think for the head Im just going to get it milled and valve stem seals replaced, headgasket, waterpump, and timing belt. And for the block Im going to get all new pistons w/ rings, rods, hone the block, etc etc..

The 1.8L engine looks pretty easy to work on, so this should be fun.

SURE!!! I can take some pics. I plan on taking a crap load, being that this would be my first 1.8L. I have a ton of pics of my previous cars internals. 4g63, 4g63T, and 420A. :gunsmilie: Shoot, if you live in Lancaster, you're more than welcome to come over once the rebuild starts, I live in Harrisburg. Than you can see it in person.
