sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't?

And whenever it doesn't sure enough the temperature needle begins to strike a boner whenever i am idling.

Is there anything I can do, before heading off to the mech's.

When you say "strike a boner" do you mean it completely overheats, or just goes up a little? Cause if it overheats in traffic (long periods of idling without moving) that means that your thermostat isn't opening up to let the cool antifreeze into your block. A cheap and easy fix (especially easy on our cars :P ) Your fan is controlled by a thermostatic switch on your thermostat housing (think there's one in the block too). But it's normal for them to turn on and off sporadicly. And one should turn on before the other. I would say that if your 3/4 up the temp gauge idling and your fan(s) don't kick on there's an electrical problem. Check to make sure your harness plug on the outer sides of each fan is connected securely. And that your sensors are triggering at the right temp. But before checking any of this you should bleed all of the air out of your cooling system either through the cap or the bleeder valve on the thermostat housing. This will be the best case scenario cause it's free, requires no tools, and takes about 5mins. to do. Let me know if this helps.
