I recently bought a 2002 eclipse and wanted some suggestions for replacing the stock speaker system. I was also curious if it would wise to purchase an amp for them as well. Component speakers seem to be a given for the front, but I don't really know who makes the best quality for my price range, which is about $450 max for replacing all speakers and possibly an amp if needed. I know about focals but they are outrageously expensive, but I guess you get what you pay for. What are some of the other brands and models they can compare within my price range?

What type of music are you mostly going to listen to on you system. That will determine the best speakers and price that you'll need to look at.

Alpine TypeR or Pioneer Premier will give you good all around lows for a decent price. And just so you know, Component speakers are not cheap and I would say you're better off just getting regular 6 1/2" or 6 3/4" speakers. Components are overrated if you ask me.

Go to http://www.sonicelectronix.com and check out some of the deals they have on their speakers.

Should I get an amp or would that be a waste?

For the Type R's you will need an amp cause no headunit is going to come close to giving those speakers enough percentage of its 100watt RMS that they have. Without an amp you will underpower the speakers and blow them.

Yea but there are better speakers for the type of music he is wanting to listen to. The Infinity's will do it, but there are other speakers that will do it better.

Kappas will work, reference will not.
Best would probably be alpine or kenwood.

Since I don't have an amplifier and don't really desire to spend money for one, I went ahead and used silver03gs suggestion of the Pioneer Premier 6 1/2" and 6x9 speakers and Pioneer Premier Headunit since the headunit that came with my car was an aftermarket Alpine CDE-9843 which isn't up to par to power the type of speakers that I was looking for. Thanks for the help and suggestions
