On my 95 3000gt when I shift into 4th gear the transmission pops out of gear unless I hold the clutch and wait for the rpms to drop. I heard this is a common problem with the 3000gt's and I've looked through tons of forums for a cause but couldn't find anything so does anyone know what causes this and any possible ways to fix it?

Any suggestions would be great, and sorry if there is any other topics like this I may have overlooked.

thank you,
Charlie

watch where you take it, not too many places rebuild these and parts are scarce.

I have an excellent trans rebuilder working for me and we do tons of these, so if you have questions feel free to give me a call.

This sounds exactly like what I posted about a few weeks ago... once in a while mine will not stay in 4th, and shifting to 3rd isn't as easy as it shoudl be.

Any chance changing the gear oil would help?

The response to my post was the shift forks need to be replaced. I researched that, and it's usually caused by people keeping their hand on the shifter.

I imagine you have to take the whole transmission off and apart to replace those.
Can anyone advise what a job like this would cost to do yourself? What do you need, etc? Gaskets, the forks themselves....

It's not a job you really want to do unless you have the repair manual with you and a lot of experience with transmissions. There are a lot of tolerances that have to be measured before final assembly of the trans. Popping out of gear is usually caused by poor maintenance of the trans. Gear oil breaks down over time and your bearings suffer. The bearings will wear down causing a slop in the trans which usually causes it to pop out of gear. Also, make sure you engine/trans mounts are still in good shape as they can cause you to pop out of gear as well. There are many reasons, so take it to a pro when getting it rebuilt.

your 4th gear syncro is out. and i'm sure you'll need a new clutch to go with it depending on how long you've been driving it like this. EXACT same problem on my 98. same gear to. cost me a total of 1900 or so after new clutch and rebuild. and that was after a 10% discount. just take a look around and get some quotes before you drop it off (i got mine done a cottman transmission)
