Hi, bought a Japanese import in NZ recently. It is a 2000 NM 3.5L 4 stage INVECS 11. Very nice. It has some wood grain around the edges of the dashboard and in the middle, cloth, 7 seater and no sunroofs.

Question is: What is the black box under the front passenger seat? It is about the size of a 6 stacker CD but nothing pops out to load them. It only accepts one CD which will play music and show up on the 8x4 inch screen high up on the dash in the same manner as a CD placed in the single slot below the radio which itself is below the screen. Tried a DVD in the slot under the seat but nothing happened. There is one screen that shows a map of some Japanese city and sattelites but nothing moves. Is the box underneath something to do with satnav?

Regards

Yes, the box is for the Sat/nav operation. It only plays the cd (and music) with the layout of what is presently on the CD: Japan. I have tried to get hold of a GPS disk of my country but this does seem to be a bigger task than I thought.

The box is also for the traffic system they have in Japan. My radio has a button which locks onto the traffic control system and supplies the road conditions and traffic information of where the car is on the Nav system.

I am trying to solve this problem with other owners around the world and the more information we gather the sooner we would be able to use all the features our our cars.

Thanks for reply. I also have a screen that seems to want to give weather or similar information to the vehicle. I am not holding out much hope of a solution but would really appreciate any help

Inquiries just now with the NZ Mitsubishi dealer says: The GPS mapping system is local to Japan and a popular add-on. There has been talk of getting discs outside of Japan but it may be a big operation with mapping providers. The same black box controls the heating and other functions so look after it. If it plays up the dealer has a CD to reboot it.

So looks like I need to find another toy to play with. Might look in the engine bay.......

Thanks again
