greetings,
my daughter has a 2002 galant, with a 4 cylinder motor. all of the sudden it started to overheat. the symptoms are as follows: it doesn't overheat immediately. it seems to run fine for a while, with the temperature in the middle of the guage, then all of the sudden the gauge starts rising into the hot range. the coolant is bubbling back into the overflow bottle, until it overflows and blows out of the bottle. i replaced the thermostat and it didn't change anything. anyone have any ideas? also, if someone can explain to me how bleed the cooling system, i will give that a try.

Hi, just a thought -- have you checked to see if the engine electrical cooling fan is working? Try it without running the air conditioner. If so, it may be a faulty temperature switch or wiring to it.

There are about 2 other posts like this one in here already and it would be good possibly if yu can go over those posts yu can get a feeling for wut may be yur issue.

As stated yu can let the car run til it reachs normal operating temps. Soon after it should reaches that the cooling fans should soon come on. MOnitor the coolant gauge and any fluctuation nearing 3/4 position toward the hot turn the car off. the fans should cycle with the temp gauge nearing the middle and not past.

If fans do not come on , on one fan onlee comes on. Check the coolant fan connectors when the car has cooled down a little. Yu can also test the cooling fans. There are many ways.

If the fans check to be both in working order , than it will most likely be the coolant fan temperature switch.

But if the fans come on and there seems to still be a cooling efficiency issue. There can be an issue with the radiator. As in a bad radiator , its restricted water passages in it. Also It is important as i have also seen dirt and debris build up in frunt of the a/c condensor and also radiator , causing a restriction of air flow. Altho teh fans are coming on they can not effectively draw air thru teh radiator to cool it don and the coolant.
