Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I changed the brake pads on all four wheels the other day. After I noticed only one tire really needed to be changed, I changed all of them anyway just to have new on all wheels. The driver side rear was the worst, the pad had expired and it was metal to metal, the rotor was grooved some, but the rest of the rotors and pads where still good. Like I said, I replaced all the pads just so I would have new all around. Monday evening my wife took the SUV, everything was working fine, she came back pretty quick and told me the anti-lock brakes light was on and the high pitched noise was also sounding when the anti-lock brakes are engaged. I then noticed the outside rear brake pads had slid half way out of the caliper. I wanted to test to see if the calipers are working correctly tonight after work, but the anti-lock brakes are still engaged. I thought the anti-lock brakes where supposed to go off after you release the brake pedal? Mine have not disengaged. Has this happened to anyone, and if so, how do you reset the anti-lock brakes? Hope there is some one out there with some advice. Thank you for your time. Aaron

If yu mean that the ABS light is still on , it does not ordinarily mean that the abs is still operating. Yu would hear the ABS modulator if it was still in operation. The rear pad that was extremely worn could be due to a bad brake caliper .

Did yu open the bleeder valves on the calipers when replacing the pads? Did yu have to replenish the brake fluid? If so yu could have gotten air into the abs modulator. This would cause teh abs light to be on. Either that or yu may have , sumhow bumped , knicked or broken etc one of the abs speed sensor wires.

I did not open the bleeder valves on the caliper, I took the cap off the brake reservoir, and used a pad spreader to push the caliper pistion back in. My make and model Montero didn't come with a ABS sensor, I called Mitsubishi and that is what they said. I am pretty sure I didn't damage anything like that. There was plenty of brake fluid in the reservoir as I was changing the pads, but last night I tried to bleed the brakes anyway. It didn't work, the ABS thinks it is still on, I have hardly no play in the brake pedal. Could the ABS pump have gone out? I appreciate your previous comments and advice. Hope someone can help. Thank you, Aaron

On Pajero's / Montero's , the rear abs speed ring and sensor are on the rear diffrential , not at the wheels., Yur brake pedal is extremely hard? As if its not being assisted by the power brake booster? ALtho The frunt wheels have speed rings and sensors located at the spindles. the brake caliper fluid line and the abs frunt sensor wire run nearly parallel to one another , check that when removing the frunt calipers that yu have not damaged the wire , unplugged the sensor etc.

Also very important. This can cause the ABS light to illuminate also and very hard brake pedal. I have seen it a couple times, sumone remove the caliper , tie it aside or wutever. And when they bolt the caliper back they do not notice that teh brake hose is twisted. So the line is then kinked. So it will hold an abnormal high side pressure at teh abs modulator and illuminate the ABS light. Also will cause a very stiff/hard brake pedal because with the brake hose kinked the fluid cannot flow normally back and forth thru freely.
