Hi all,
My Starwagon 2.4 petrol does not like to start first thing in the morning.

It winds over about 15 - 20 times then fires up normaly...

After that, it starts first pop all day, and runs great.

I have new plugs and leads and dissy cap... all new.

I have petrol in the fuel rail, and pump has no delay... pumps heaps.

The timing is 10degree BTC.

The motor has a reco head about one year ago, plenty of compression

This is a mystery...

Any Tech heads or advisors, all input welcome...

Thanks guys.

Yeah Hi, It's EFI.. (fuel rail full)
This is a real mystery problem...
There must be something I'm missing
It has a stepper motor choke ( no butterfly) but that only raises the idle...
Maybe the temp sensor is crook... do u know what the resistance should be and I'll test with a mulitmetre...
But I don't think that's it... once it fires it idles and runs perfect...

It is a tricky problem and a bad problem, in winter it allmost flattens the battery trying to start.

Any ideas...

Whoops missed that bit :P

To be fair i'm having some similar issues with mine, i have the same motor and once its warm it revs to 1500-2000 unless i pull the temp sender off and its fine again. However i've notice with my Gas kit that sometimes it wont allow it to start on petrol and the fuel pump stops working so it will crank for ages like yours.

Maybe like you say the temp sensor is playing up, if it thinks its warm when its not then effectively you wont be getting any choke on start-up hence the problem. I don't have the resistance to hand but try pulling it out checking the resistance when cold and then when its dipped in boiling water maybe? However you says it runs fine as soon as its going...

If you haven't reset the ecu already try doing that too..

Might be worth checking the distributor itself for the cam angle sensor too as if that is playing up the engine management will have issues finding TDC when you start it... If the dizzy had been pulled out then maybe double check to see if its in the right place as mine wasn't by one tooth when i first tried to start it and it wouldn't fire for ages before i realised. Try retarding the ignition a little more too to see if that cures it...

Hope that helps a bit :)

I'll try and find the resistance of the sensor tomoz...

Yeah thanks,
Your dissy cam angle approach is intersting...
but this problem just came on suddenly, and motor runs fine and starts Great after first time of the day...
so I am thinking it should not be that ...it is a hell of a problem.

when I pull a lead and check for spark, it looks weak to my eye...
very subjective, I know... but maybe for some reson the starter circuit is pulling too much juice... the starter has new brushes recently as has the atlternator.

someone said I may have a crack in a fusable link... is that near the positive terminal do u know...

It is very tricky problem, but must be somereason for it...
spark or petrol ...the compression is good.
I suspect spark but don't know were to look or how to check or rigg it up so as to eliminate...
hey thanks your help, u sound fair dinkum.
Ian

Hmm, maybe its worth buying an aftermarket coil pack, and Repco or Supercheap will have them in stock. I recently fitted a Bosch GT40T in place of some old one on another van and it improved it no end as a good spark is helpful for a good start. That area sounds promising if your spark doesn't look to clever.

The fusable links are near the + terminal yeah, in the little black box there are green and red wires poking out, you could try them but i'm not sure if you'll sort it with them, there either good or bad really...

When your driving normally then if it behaves fine and has lots of poke then fuel lines and blocked fuel filters can be ruled out, maybe it might miss a little under load if the coil pack is on its way out though.....

Investigate the spark issue a little more maybe too.

Good call,
funny how it sometimes takes on 'outsider' to pick the obvious...
they say u should never try to be ur own Doctor...

I'll change the coil, not much else to help spark that I can think of...
maybe clean up the batterey earths... power likes earth to be good...

haven't noticed any slight missing though...

There are no noticable problems at all, with the motor

second gear can be hard to get in... feels linkage related as opposed to syncros, and it wouldn't be that anyway because it is hard going up the gears...
Must be in the cab at the cable 'junction'...
