Hi all - been stuck with this problem for two weeks, hope somebody here can help out!

A little over a month ago my CEL came on with code P0456 small evap leak. After a few false positives the problem was determined to be in the fuel filler neck, where a tiny rust hole had developed just behind the lower protector shield. My mechanic put some Bondoglass over the hole as a stopgap solution.

The problem is that I haven't been able to get a hold of a replacement filler neck ANYWHERE. I've called dozens of east coast dealers and they're all out of stock. One dealer was nice enough to call Mitsubishi on my behalf and found out that there are 40+ back orders, with the nearest promise date from the mfc. of Nov 15! I can't wait that long!

Has anyone here ever had similar trouble getting this or another type of OEM part and found another way? I really don't want to have to wait until Nov as the bondo isn't going to hold.

I called my mitsu dealer, yea they are on back order, but 5 dealers in the US have them in stock, got 2 #s for ya, both out of Ohio.

List price $ 130.80

888 589 7725
440 953 1000

give it a shot.

Ask if they will UPS or somehow ship it to you.

Ahh no luck! The second dealer's stock is special order and reserved for other customers - I guess this part is in seriously heavy demand. The first dealer's number was actually disconnected and after some Googling found out they went bankrupt earlier this year for not paying debts to Mitsu... yikes.

Still, the one guy I talked to said I can apparently have any dealer put in a parts on demand order and possibly get it sooner at a premium. I think I might try that route next.

Thanks for the help though Gview

Thanks man. After extensive searching it really appears that just nobody has this right now. I ended up getting in touch with a wrecker in my area that pulled a working one from a 2002 donor... for some reason I hadn't thought of exploring that route in the beginning. Better than nothing!

Last update on this - just in case what I've learned can help anyone in the future:

Mitsu shipped my rush order around the same time I received the salvage neck - obviously I had the new one installed and returned the old one to the junkyard. According to my mechanic the replacement filler neck is made of a different alloy to resist rust, this appears to be a DESIGN flaw in the 3G Eclipse that involves moisture and dirt becoming trapped in the lower protector shield and submerging the filler neck, similar to a known issue in the recent gen Toyota Camry. However while Toyota has acknowledged this there hasn't been a Mitsu bulletin about this to my knowing.

For reference if anyone gets CEL P0456/P0455 that isn't loose gas cap, remove BOTH protector shields to visually inspect the fuel filler neck before replacing anything else. Part #MR573836 for reference.

I know this might cost more if you do find that it is rusting through take it to the dealer to have it fixed. After enough people take it to the dealer for the same problem it will become a recall and then others that have this problem will get it fixed for free. Oh and keep your receipts showing that you replaced it because you should get a refund after having it fixed if it becomes a recall.
